Reeds, Gulls and Winter Swans: Mushroom Lake on Shihezi’s Desert Rim
平湖苇岸起秋声,雪落天鹅入画屏 Píng hú wěi’àn qǐ qiūshēng, xuěluò tiān’é rù huàpíng – Autumn sounds rise from the flat lake’s reedbanks; when the snow falls, the swans step into a painted screen
正文:蘑菇湖水库 Mógū Hú Shuǐkù Mushroom Lake lies northwest of the city grid, where the irrigated poplars give up and the gobi begins – a shallow, reed-fringed reservoir that has become, almost by accident, the region’s best half-day of bird country. The name comes from the mushroom-shaped islets the low water leaves in summer; the appeal is simpler: big sky, flat water, and birds in numbers that surprise travelers who came expecting a utility pond.

In autumn the reedbeds go gold and the migrants pass in strings – gulls and terns in rafts, ducks wheeling in tight flocks, waders working the mudflats at the western end. Bring binoculars: the lake is wide and the birds keep their distance, but even from the shore track the moving pattern of waterfowl across the mirrored shallows is worth a long stay. On still mornings the water reflects so cleanly that the birds seem to fly through cloud.
Winter is the lake’s second season. When the shallows ice over, whooper swans hold the open channels by the dozens – a population the city’s bird society counts every January from the eastern dike – and the sight of white birds steaming in air that freezes eyelashes is worth the cold. Locals treat the swans as residents: the counts are published, the feeding spots are known, and a Saturday crowd with cameras forms at the dike as reliably as the birds do.
The lake sits twenty minutes by taxi from downtown, and the road out runs past the last regiment farms, so the trip doubles as a look at the irrigation landscape that made this basin farmable. There is no gate and no formal trail – a flat shore track, a couple of dikes with views, and the long Xinjiang dusk coming down over the water. Go for sunset, when the reeds turn copper and the first ducks come in to roost.

Practicalities
Beyond the lake, the same 石河子市 Shíhézǐ Shì Shihezi City keeps more places worth the detour: 兵团军垦博物馆 Bīngtuán Jūnkěn Bówùguǎn the reclamation museum for the founding story, 周总理纪念碑 Zhōu Zǒnglǐ Jìniànbēi the memorial for the white stele, 艾青诗歌馆 Ài Qīng Shīgēguǎn the poetry hall for the manuscripts, or 军垦第一犁广场 Jūnkěn Dì-yī Lí Guǎngchǎng the First Plow square for the bronze group – four more doors into the same 石河子市 Shíhézǐ Shì Shihezi City. Once the lake is circled, our Shihezi food map fills the day.

Words and Names
flowcloud would say Mushroom Lake is the oasis keeping a wild margin: utility water turned swan country, reeds that go copper at dusk, and a winter census that treats wild birds like neighbors. All checked November 2026.
Getting there: The reservoir lies on the city’s northwestern rim, reached by taxi in twenty minutes or by the road that loops past the last regiment farms; there is no formal gate fee, the shore track is flat, and sunset is the hour to aim for. All checked November 2026.
