Dahai Caoshan: An Alpine Meadow at 3,570 Metres on the Wumeng Crest, Huize, Qujing

天苍苍,野茫茫,风吹草低见牛羊。Tiān cāngcāng, yě mángmáng, fēng chuī cǎo dī xiàn niú yáng – The sky is grey, the wilds are wide; the wind bends the grass and cattle and sheep come into view.

大海草山 Dàhǎi Cǎoshān Dahai Caoshan – “the great sea of grass mountain” – is an alpine meadow in 大海乡 Dàhǎi Xiāng Dahai Township, 会泽县 Huìzé Xiàn Huize County, Qujing, some 40 km of switchbacking mountain road southwest of the county town. It is not, despite the name, a lake: 大海 Dàhǎi “great sea” is 彝语 Yíyǔ Yi for “high steps,” and the meadow spreads over about 200,000 mu – roughly 13,000 hectares – of 亚高山草甸 yàgāoshān cǎodiàn subalpine grassland between about 3,570 m and the 4,017.3 m summit of 牯牛寨峰 Gǔniúzhài Fēng Guniuizhai Peak, the highest point in Qujing and the main peak of the 乌蒙山 Wūméng Shān Wumeng range. The 南诏 Nánzhào Nanzhao kingdom once ranked it an eastern sacred mountain, local 彝族 Yízú Yi herders have grazed it for generations, and it is now a national 4A scenic area that provincial publicity calls 东方新西兰 Dōngfāng Xīnxīlán the “New Zealand of the East” – a nickname the plateau earns only in the sense that the grass runs to the horizon and the cattle and sheep wander at will. What you actually get is a working grazing commons threaded with a 13-km scenic loop, ridge roads lined with 风车 fēngchē wind turbines, thickets of 杜鹃 dùjuān rhododendron below the crest and stands of 冷杉 lěngshān fir in the sheltered valleys worth confirming, under weather that changes four times a day.

The honest caveat is altitude and access, not scenery. The gate ticket is quoted at 35 yuan worth confirming, with the 观光车 guānguāngchē sightseeing shuttle at about 20 yuan return worth confirming – buy it, because private cars are barred from the meadow and the loop runs 13 km; parking is about 10 yuan worth confirming and horse rides roughly 50-80 yuan half an hour worth confirming. Hours are about 8:30-17:30 with last entry at 16:00, extended in the winter ski season worth confirming. The road up from 会泽 Huìzé town takes an hour and a half to two hours, is narrow and fog-prone after rain, and can close in snow; the county bus station runs 乡村班车 xiāngcūn bānchē rural minibuses toward 大海乡 Dàhǎi Xiāng, or you can share a car for about 50 yuan each way worth confirming. From 曲靖 Qūjìng Qujing the drive is about two and a half hours, from 昆明 Kūnmíng Kunming about three and a half worth confirming. At 3,570 m the air is thin – walk slowly for the first hour, carry a jacket even in July – and before May the grass is brown and the meadow is not worth the climb; the season is June to August, when the average temperature is about 18 °C, the wildflowers are out and the 云海 yúnhǎi sea of clouds forms on clear mornings. Autumn turns the grass gold and brings the clearest skies; winter dresses it in 雾凇 wùsōng rime and opens the ski slope.

The rhythm of the place is the 风车天路 fēngchē tiān lù wind-turbine ridge road and the grazing. Ride the shuttle up, then walk the loop toward 白龙垭口 Báilóng Yàkǒu White Dragon Pass and on to 滴水岩 Dīshuǐyán Dripping Cliff, where a viewing tower looks over the 大黑山 Dàhēishān Dahei massif and, on clear days, three provinces – 云南 Yúnnán Yunnan, 贵州 Guìzhōu Guizhou and 四川 Sìchuān Sichuan; the 小犀牛 Xiǎoxīniú Little Rhino meadow, with its stream, is the prettiest stretch for 露营 lùyíng camping, and the climb to 牯牛寨 Gǔniúzhài through the rhododendron belt is a full day’s undertaking worth confirming. Tents may be pitched in designated areas worth confirming, but nights are near freezing even in summer and the wind does not stop; the simpler option is a yurt-style room near the visitor centre worth confirming. Photographers should work the first hour after sunrise and the hour before the shuttle closes, when the sheep and cattle come down the slopes and the light rakes across the grass. Dress in layers, protect yourself against the sun in the thin air, and keep to the trails – this is herders’ pasture, with 粪便 fènbiào droppings, 泥泞 nínìng mud and electric fences to watch for. All checked October 2026.
