Nakeli, the Tea-Horse Road Post Station That Costs Nothing to Walk, Ning’er, Pu’er

马蹄声远,茶香未冷。Mǎtí shēng yuǎn, chá xiāng wèi lěng – The hoofbeats have faded; the scent of tea has not.

那柯里茶马古镇 Nàkēlǐ Chámǎ Gǔzhèn Nakeli is a road village in 同心镇 Tóngxīn Zhèn Tongxin Town, 宁洱哈尼族彝族自治县 Níng’ěr Hānízú Yízú Zìzhìxiàn Ning’er County, threaded by the 二一三国道 G213 about 22 km from the county town and 25 km from 思茅 Sīmǎo worth confirming – which makes it, for most travellers, the first stop on the way out of 普洱 Pǔ’ěr. The name is 傣语 Dǎiyǔ Dai for “good land beside a bridge” worth confirming, and the bridge is still there: the village grew where two streams meet, and the 茶马古道 Chámǎ Gǔdào Tea-Horse Road – the caravan network that carried 普洱茶 pǔ’ěrchá from these hills to Lhasa and beyond for the better part of a millennium – runs straight through it as a lane of worn 青石板 qīngshíbǎn bluestone, the middle hollowed into a shallow groove by centuries of hooves. 宁洱 Níng’ěr was the seat of the 普洱府 Pǔ’ěr Fǔ founded in 1729 and the origin point of five great caravan routes, and 那柯里 Nàkēlǐ was one of its last 驿站 yìzhàn post stations before the flats. The village still keeps the kit of a road town: the 荣发马店 Róngfā Mǎdiàn Rongfa horse-shop, the best-preserved of its kind on the road, shows its 马槽 mǎcáo mangers, 马鞍 mǎ’ān saddles and 马灯 mǎdēng lanterns; the 风雨桥 fēngyǔqiáo wind-rain bridge, the 北寨门 Běi Zhàimén north gate stockade and the 马跳石 mǎtiàoshí horse-leap stones stand as the day’s landmarks.

The honest appeal is that 那柯里 Nàkēlǐ costs nothing: the village is a 4A-rated scenic area that charges no gate ticket worth confirming, open around the clock, and the 那柯里段茶马古道遗址 Nàkēlǐ Duàn Chámǎ Gǔdào section was listed as a national key cultural relic in 2013 worth confirming, which means the 马蹄印 mǎtíyìn hoof prints are protected rather than repainted. From 思茅 Sīmǎo, the 鸿丰客运站 Hóngfēng Kèyùnzhàn runs 普洱 Pǔ’ěr-宁洱 Níng’ěr buses every half hour or so for 10-15 yuan; ask for the 那柯里服务区 Nàkēlǐ Fúwùqū stop by the expressway service area and walk in along the wooden boardwalk, or ride through to the village itself worth confirming. Driving takes 30 minutes from 普洱 Pǔ’ěr city and about four hours from 昆明 Kūnmíng; parking at the gate runs a few yuan an hour with a 20-yuan daily cap worth confirming. Inside, the money goes to experiences: a tea-making session at about 68 yuan worth confirming, horse rides, 绝版木刻 juébǎn mùkè Yunnan woodblock printing and plant-dye workshops, and a 马帮菜 mǎbāngcài caravaneer lunch for roughly 50 yuan a head. Stay in one of the restored courtyard 民宿 mínsù guesthouses – a couple of hundred yuan a night, some with a tea room – or keep a room in the county town twenty minutes away.

Half a day covers the standard line – 大水车 dàshuǐchē waterwheel and 吊桥 diàoqiáo suspension bridge at the entrance, the 北寨门 Běi Zhàimén, the 风雨桥 fēngyǔqiáo, the 荣发马店 Róngfā Mǎdiàn, the 马蹄遗址 mǎtí yízhǐ and a finish with tea at the 云上乡愁书院 Yúnshàng Xiāngchóu Shūyuàn courtyard library – but the village rewards an early start and ideally an overnight, because the day-trip buses arrive by mid-morning and leave by dusk. October to April is the dry season, when the streams run clear and the rice behind the village is at its greenest; in the spring rains the stone gets slick and the 马帮情歌 Mǎbāng Qínggē “Caravan Love Song”, born here as the second movement of the Yunnan standard 小河淌水 Xiǎohé Tǎngshuǐ worth confirming, sounds better beside a fire than in the wet. Walk forty minutes up the ridge road for the whole village at golden hour, and if you have a second day, 磨黑古镇 Mòhēi Gǔzhèn forty minutes west – the old salt town of the same caravan economy, free to walk and famous for its 烧烤 shāokǎo barbecue – pairs naturally with the county town’s 民族团结誓词碑 Mínzú Tuánjié Shìcíbēi, the 1951 oath sworn by dozens of ethnic representatives. All checked October 2026.
