Air Meadow Above the River Terraces: Riding the High Grassland of Nalati in Ili, Xinjiang

空中草原接云平,一河碧水绕山行 Kōngzhōng cǎoyuán jiē yún píng, yīhé bìshuǐ rào shān xíng – The sky-high meadow meets the clouds evenly; a jade river winds around the mountain.

那拉提 Nàlátí Nalati spreads across the Xinyuan county highlands where the Ili valley narrows – a grassland locals call the air meadow because the pasture sits on a plateau shelf well above the river terraces, close enough to the cloud line that morning riders come down wearing mist (worth confirming the details for the two-zone ticket, since the air-grassland and the river-valley loops are priced and bused separately). The Kazakh herding season still organises the calendar: June brings the moving-in of flocks and the first yurt camps, July fills the meadows with horses for the tourist season, and September empties them again. Between the two loops the landscape swaps characters – one side open hill grass with lookout towers, the other a river valley of poplar and birch where the light comes through the leaves instead of over the saddle.

Two rhythms work here. The first is the bus-and-platform circuit: ride up, photograph the meadow from the platform, and let the shuttle deliver the views in an afternoon. The second is the horse version – Kazakh-run riding outfits below the gate hire by the hour, and an hour on horseback reads the grassland the way it was written: at walking pace, with the herder’s dog ahead and the whole valley opening one bend at a time. The stock answer in kind: do the valley loop first while the air is cool, ride after lunch, and stay for the evening turn when the day crowds drain back to the town.

Call it honestly: Nalati is Ili’s most famous grassland name, and the fame shows in ticket prices, coach numbers and a gate town that exists for tourism (worth confirming the details for horse-ride insurance and the shoulder-season schedule, when some loops close early). What the fame cannot wear out is the altitude – even in August the air comes off the snow line, the meadow keeps its spring green longer than the valley pastures, and the herders’ tents are real working camps, not stage sets. Come early in the day, buy the combined ticket only if you will ride both loops, and leave the town’s karaoke strip to the coaches.

Practicalities

Nearly everything else on this Ili list trades a different mood on the same prefecture: choose 喀拉峻草原 Kālājùn cǎoyuán the Kalajun grassland for the ridge lines of the west, 霍城薰衣草田 Huòchéng xūnyīcǎotián the lavender fields for a June haze, 伊宁六星街 Yīníng Liùxīngjiē the Liuxing streets for urban evening, or 喀赞其民俗区 Kāzànqí mínsúqū the Kazanqi quarters for painted doorways – four more doors into the same 伊犁哈萨克自治州 Yīlí Hāsàkè Zìzhìzhōu Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture. Once the meadows are planned, our Ili food map fills the eating hours.

Words and Names

flowcloud would say Nalati is the prefecture’s summer letterhead: written large, posted everywhere, and still worth reading at first light when the coaches are asleep. All checked November 2026.

Getting there: The gate town stands east of Yining on the G218; seasonal buses and shared vans run from both cities, and the scenic shuttles loop the air-meadow and river-valley zones from the visitor centre – keep the last-down time in mind when you plan the horse ride. All checked November 2026.
