The Pagoda in the Market: Nanchan Temple Quarter at Wuxi
南朝古刹市声里,塔影灯河共一街 Náncháo gǔchà shìshēng lǐ, tǎyǐng dēng hé gòng yī jiē – An old temple of the southern dynasties lives amid market noise; pagoda shadow and lanterned river share one street
正文:南禅寺 Nánchán Sì Nanchan Temple is the temple quarter at the old city’s south gate, a working complex of halls around the Miaoguang Pagoda that has traded incense for a thousand years and now shares its courtyards with one of Wuxi’s busiest market streets. The temple dates its lineage to the Liang dynasty, when it joined the roster of southern monasteries, and the present seven-storey pagoda – rebuilt in the 1980s on older footings – is the landmark the whole quarter arranges itself around.

By day the temple and the market argue pleasantly with each other. Halls keep their altars and their quiet; outside the walls the lanes run to tea stalls, antiques, pet cages and snack counters, with the canal one block east. The pagoda is at its photogenic from the bridge alignments along the water, where its silhouette stacks against the old-city rooflines.
Evening flips the quarter’s mood. Lanterns come up along the canal and the food streets, the night market fills the plaza, and the pagoda – lit from below – turns the temple into the quarter’s glowing centerpiece. Boat rides on the ancient canal start and end near the temple wharf, making Nanchan the natural western gate of the water-lane district that runs east to Qingming Bridge.
An hour inside the temple grounds, then whatever the market streets hold – most visitors fold Nanchan into the same evening as a canal stroll or a boat ride. The quarter is centrally placed: metro lines stop at the door, and the walk along the water to the bridge quarter takes half an hour past snack counters that double as dinner.

Practicalities
Beyond the temple, the same 无锡市 Wúxī Shì Wuxi City keeps more places worth the detour: 鼋头渚 Yuán tóu zhǔ Turtle Head Isle for the lake peninsula, 灵山大佛 Língshān Dàfó the Grand Buddha for the lakeside colossus, 清名桥 Qīngmíng Qiáo Qingming Bridge for the water lanes, or 寄畅园 Jìchàng Yuán Jichang Garden for the classical garden – four more doors into the same 无锡市 Wúxī Shì Wuxi City. Once the pagoda is counted, our Wuxi food map fills the day.
