The Lake That Holds a Red Boat: Nanhu Lake

一叶红船开天地,烟雨楼上望南湖 Yī yè hóng chuán kāi tiāndì, yānyǔ lóu shàng wàng Nán Hú – One red boat opened a new age; from the Mist-Rain Tower the whole lake comes into view

南湖 Nán Hú Nanhu Lake lies inside the city grid of 嘉兴市 Jiāxīng Shì Jiaxing City itself, and its claim on history outweighs its size by whole orders of magnitude: in the summer of 1921, after delegates of the First Congress of the Communist Party of China were moved off a Shanghai brothel bus by police attention, they finished their meeting aboard a wooden pleasure boat moored off the lake-heart island here – and the 红船 hóng chuán red boat became the founding image of modern China’s founding story. A full-scale replica rides at the same mooring today, and the lake around it is the calmest possible frame for the biggest chapter in the city’s album.

The lake-heart island is the visual anchor: 湖心岛 Húxīn Dǎo Island, ringed by weeping willows and reached by a short ferry, carries 烟雨楼 Yānyǔ Lóu the Mist-Rain Tower – a pavilion rebuilt again and again since the Five Dynasties, named for the lake’s signature weather, when mist and drizzle blur the willows into a ink-wash scroll. Climb it and the whole basin arranges itself below: the red boat to one side, the city’s low towers on the far shore, water filling the middle like a held breath.

What surprises first-time visitors is how casually the lake sits in daily Jiaxing. Joggers circle it at dawn, tai chi groups claim the shaded corners, and the 相湖八景 xiāng hú bā jǐng shoreline park keeps free benches where office workers eat lunch facing a national icon. The blend is the lake’s real charm: this is a working city’s front yard that happens to hold a shrine – no solemnity required, and a bowl of noodles five minutes’ walk from the pier.

Give the lake a half day and pair it with the old lanes: the ferry circuit and tower take the morning, the 汽艇 qìtǐng electric launches run the wider circuit when wind allows, and the lakeside — with the red boat riding its mooring the whole time – photographs best in the soft light before the coach parties land. History here is not roped off behind glass; it floats, bobs, and lets you look it in the eye.

Practicalities

  • The lakeside park is free and open all day; the island, tower and red boat are covered by a combined ticket sold at the pier – ferry every half hour, more often on holidays.
  • The classic circuit is island first, then the boat viewing platform on the east shore, then the memorial museum nearby – walkable in one loop.
  • Mornings beat afternoons: the tour coaches land mid-morning and the willow light is softer before ten.
  • Pair the visit with 月河历史街区 Yuèhé Lìshǐ Jiēqū Yuehe Old Street, ten minutes north, for lunch and the lane-museum circuit.

Words and Names

南湖 Nán Hú Nanhu Lake, the city lake; 红船 hóng chuán the red boat, the First Congress replica; 湖心岛 Húxīn Dǎo the lake-heart island; 烟雨楼 Yānyǔ Lóu the Mist-Rain Tower, the island pavilion; 嘉兴 Jiāxīng Jiaxing, the prefecture city. Beyond the red boat, the same 嘉兴市 Jiāxīng Shì Jiaxing City keeps more places worth the detour: 乌镇 Wūzhèn the lamp-lit water town, 西塘 Xītáng the covered-corridor canal town, 盐官观潮 Yánguān guāncháo the Qiantang bore shore, or 南北湖 Nánběi Hú the mountain-sea-lake reserve – four more doors into the same 嘉兴市 Jiāxīng Shì Jiaxing City. Once the lake has had its congress, our Jiaxing food map fills the table.

flowcloud would say Nanhu is a city lake that reads history at water level: a wooden boat holding a century, a pavilion holding a thousand years of mist, and between them a park where Jiaxing walks its dog and eats its lunch as if both were equally normal. All checked November 2026.

Getting there: Nanhu sits a ten-minute walk from Jiaxing railway station across the city center – the lakeside park is free, the island and red boat are covered by a combined ticket sold at the pier, and mornings before the tour buses are quietest. All checked November 2026.
