落霞与孤鹜齐飞,秋水共长天一色。Luòxiá yǔ gūwù qífēi, qiūshuǐ gòng chángtiān yīsè – Sunset clouds and a lone wild goose rise together; autumn water shares one colour with the sky.
纳帕海 Nàpàhǎi Napahai – “the lake behind the forest” in Tibetan – is a seasonal highland 湿地 shīdì wetland about 6-8 km northwest of 香格里拉 Xiānggélǐlā Shangri-La, at about 3,260-3,300 m. It is one water body with two faces: in the rainy months (roughly June to October) snowmelt and rain flood the basin into a broad lake that mirrors 石卡雪山 Shíkǎ Xuěshān Shika Snow Mountain, and in the dry months (November to May) the water retreats to leave the open meadow known as 依拉草原 Yīlā Cǎoyuán Yila Grassland. The same ground is therefore both lake and pasture through the year, and it is listed as an 国际重要湿地 guójì zhòngyào shīdì internationally important (Ramsar) wetland and a wintering ground for the 黑颈鹤 hēijǐnghè black-necked crane.

The honest money story is that the open wetland and the 环湖路 huánhú lù ring road are free to drive or cycle – about a 20 km loop from the city – and you meet the place at its edges: the “water-on-the-road” stretch near 石门关 Shímén Guān Stone-Gate Pass, the high-point view by the alpine plant garden, and the marshes below Shika where cranes feed. Some privately fenced pastures and the commercial horse-riding yards charge a few tens of yuan – pasture entry roughly 10-20, riding packages from about 50 up to 200 – and a few gated “scenic” entries advertise tickets in the 20-40 yuan range; none of that is the wetland itself, which you simply circle for free. It was also a stretch of the 茶马古道 Chámǎ Gǔdào Tea-Horse Road, and locals still hold a 煨桑 wèisāng juniper-burning offering to the lake each autumn.

Timing is everything. Come June-August for water over grass and the “sky mirror” road; come November-March for the cranes and golden grass, with the best light after about 4 pm when the meadow glows. Bring a windproof layer and, for birds, a long lens and patience – approach quietly, never chase the 黑颈鹤 hēijǐnghè – and watch the weather: the loop has stretches with no signal and occasional deep puddles you should not charge through. A half day on a bike or in a slow car covers it; the wetland asks to be lingered at, not ticked off, and the off-season crane watch is the reason most travellers call it worth the detour.
Practicalities
- Rating: A Ramsar (internationally important) wetland and a seasonal lake/pasture; it is not a graded national scenic area. It forms part of the wider Diqing highland landscape.
- Tickets: The open wetland and the ring road are free; private pasture entry runs about 10-20 yuan and horse-riding packages from about 50 up to 200 yuan, and a few gated “scenic” entries advertise tickets in the 20-40 yuan range – but there is no single official gate fee for the lake itself.
- Address: 建塘镇西北部 Jiàntáng Zhèn xīběibù, about 6-8 km northwest of the Shangri-La county town; follow the signs to 纳帕海环湖路 Nàpàhǎi huánhú lù.
- Time needed: Half a day by bike or slow car on the ring road; a full morning or late afternoon for the crane watch in winter.

flowcloud would say that 纳帕海 Nàpàhǎi is one wetland with two faces – a flooded lake in summer, the 依拉草原 Yīlā Cǎoyuán meadow in winter, circled for free on the 环湖路 huánhú lù – and that the move is November to March for the 黑颈鹤 hēijǐnghè at 4 pm light, because the open basin is free and the cranes are the whole point. All checked October 2026.
