Twenty Years Older Than Shanghai’s: the Old Bund of Ningbo

三江口上百舸竞,一岸洋楼半城灯 Sānjiāngkǒu shàng bǎi gě jìng, yī àn yánglóu bàn chéng dēng – A hundred boats race at the Three Rivers mouth; one bank of foreign buildings holds half the city’s lights

老外滩 Lǎowàitān the Old Bund of Ningbo is the treaty-port riverfront that opened in 1844 – twenty years before Shanghai built its own – where the 余姚江 Yúyáo Jiāng Yuyao and 奉化江 Fènghuà Jiāng Fenghua rivers marry into the 甬江 Yǒng Jiāng Yong River at 三江口 Sānjiāngkǒu the Three Rivers confluence. The stone embankment keeps its treaty-era skyline: the gothic 天主教堂 Tiānzhǔ Jiàotáng Catholic church, the old customs house, merchant guilds and the bank facades that once cleared the province’s silver. Today the quarter is Ningbo’s evening stage – bars in colonial terraces, wedding parties on the esplanade, and the ferries still cutting the confluence under the bridge lights.

The architecture walk is the draw:哥特式钟楼 gētèshì zhōnglóu the gothic bell tower of the church, the 朱氏宅邸 Zhū shì zháidì merchant courtyard houses, and the riverside warehouses turned galleries – each block a layer of the port century. The area escaped the wars that flattened Shanghai’s versions, so the brickwork is original down to the ship chandlers’ marks.

Night is the Bund’s second business: the tower glows, the riverside tables fill, and the crowd flows between the craft-beer terraces and the temple lanes behind. Weekend evenings bring the boat tours that circle the confluence – the skyline of Ningbo’s new financial district glittering directly across from the 1840s stone.

Give it an evening: the church and customs house in the blue hour, dinner on a river terrace, then the riverside promenade past the wedding parties to the bridge for the full confluence panorama. Morning belongs to the fish breakfast lanes behind the Bund, where the port’s oldest market still sets up before the bars wake.

Practicalities

  • The Bund sits ten minutes’ walk from downtown’s Tianyi Square across the bridges; metro Line 2 stops at 外滩大桥 Wàitān Dàqiáo Bund Bridge station.
  • The quarter is free and always open; the church interior opens on Sunday services only.
  • Boat tours of the confluence run evening slots on weekends; buy at the pier half an hour ahead.
  • Summer nights own the terraces – winter brings the fog that photographs best.

Words and Names

老外滩 Lǎowàitān the Old Bund, treaty-port riverfront of 1844; 三江口 Sānjiāngkǒu the Three Rivers confluence; 天主教堂 Tiānzhǔ Jiàotáng the gothic Catholic church of the French mission; 甬江 Yǒng Jiāng the Yong River, Ningbo’s own waterway and name. Beyond the riverfront, the same 宁波市 Níngbō Shì Ningbo City keeps more places worth the detour: 天一阁 Tiānyī Gé the four-century library, 溪口雪窦山 Xīkǒu Xuědòu Shān the falls and Buddha of Xikou, 东钱湖 Dōngqiánhú the big lake on the city’s edge, or 前童古镇 Qiántóng Gǔzhèn the pebble-lane town of Ninghai – four more doors into the same 宁波市 Níngbō Shì Ningbo City. Once the confluence has had its light show, our Ningbo food map fills the table.

flowcloud would say the Old Bund is a port century on standby: treaty bricks holding bars and bakeries, a church clock still timing the ferries – and the river underneath running the same business it always has, just with better lighting. All checked November 2026.

Getting there: The Old Bund sits ten minutes on foot from downtown Tianyi Square across the bridges – Metro Line 2 stops at Bund Bridge station five minutes from the embankment, and the rail-station ride runs fifteen minutes. All checked November 2026.
