The Roof of Central Zhejiang: Canyons of Niutou Mountain

千米绝壁挂飞瀑,一峡清水出浙中 Qiān mǐ juébì guà fēipù, yī xiá qīngshuǐ chū Zhèzhōng – A thousand-meter cliff hangs with flying falls; one canyon of clear water runs out of central Zhejiang

牛头山 Niútóu Shān Niutou Mountain is the green giant in the far southwest of 武义 Wǔyì Wuyi County, 金华市 Jīnhuá Shì Jinhua City – a national forest park whose 1,560-meter summit is the roof of central Zhejiang, and whose real show is the canyon below it: 石门峡 Shímén Xiá the Stone Gate Gorge, where the river drops through pools so clear the local tourism board prints the visibility figures. The mountain sits on the wet side of the province’s water divide, so the waterfalls keep working even in autumn, and the forest cover runs near-total – fern canyons, camellia slopes, air the brochures measure in negative ions.

The gorge walk is the classic route: boardwalks and stone stairways following the river up a narrowing V, past swim-blue pools (some open for the brave in summer), trestle bridges and the first waterfalls. Midway, the cliff path crosses on hanging walkways where the rock overhangs the water and the whole canyon hums with spray.

The upper mountain carries the Taoist chapter: the cliff-edge 天师殿 Tiānshī Diàn Heavenly Master shrine, tied to 叶法善 Yè Fǎshàn Ye Fashan, the Tang dynasty Taoist who is said to have cultivated here, and a summit ridge that looks down on an ocean of layered green ranges. The park’s valley resort keeps hot-spring tubs and riverside lodges for the overnight version of the same mountain.

Plan a full day or a weekend: the gorge boardwalks in the morning cool, the cliff shrines and ridge after lunch, and the descent in time for a riverside dinner at the park gate. In winter the upper trail ices – the gorge stays open while the summit closes, and the hot-spring resorts below pick up the season.

Practicalities

  • The park sits 60 kilometers southwest of Wuyi county town – the last hour is mountain road; buses are sparse, self-drive or a chartered car is the practical option.
  • The gorge route is one-way up-valley: boardwalks, hanging walkways and stairs, 2-3 hours with photo stops; the summit adds another 2.
  • Summer weekends fill the pools with swimmers; weekdays give the canyon back to the kingfishers.
  • Bring a dry change of shoes – the splash zones are generous and the stone stays wet.
