Luojiatao: the Free Miao Village on the Hill

Luójiātuó yī tuán, Tàiyuán zhèn shàng; miáozhài yī piàn, sānjí yī pái. — One Luo family mound, up in Taiyuan town; one Miao stockade, one 3A plaque.

Luojiatao Miao Village (罗家坨苗寨, Luójiātuó Miáozhài) is a 3A-rated (graded October 2020), free-access Miao settlement at Taiyuan Town (太原镇) — a village of the Miao stilted-house type, kept as a living聚落 rather than a rebuilt show street. It is the county’s small-scale ethnic sight: no ticket, no show architecture, just the village’s own line of houses and the slopes they stand on.

The Miao village’s value is its ordinariness — the stilted house (吊脚楼), the slope terraces and the village’s line are the tradition’s everyday form, and the free 3A rating exists to keep the form. The county’s big-ticket Miao statement is the built city upriver; this is the other half, the version that was not constructed for visitors, and the visit is a village walk rather than a monument tour.

The village is a living address, so the visit is a walk and a courtesy — the residents are not exhibits, and the morning is theirs. There is no ticket and no show; pair it with the county’s other sights rather than expecting a day of its own.

Luojiatao Miao Village

flowcloud would say that the county’s Miao statement comes in two sizes — a built city and a living village — and that the free one is the one that never asks for a ticket.
