A Mansion Wearing Seven Hundred Years of China: Porcelain House
古瓷片片镶成壁,一栋洋楼万件窑 Gǔ cí piànpiàn xiāng chéng bì, yī dòng yánglóu wàn jiàn yáo – Shard by shard of ancient porcelain walls are made; one foreign-style mansion wears ten thousand kilns
瓷房子 Cífángzi The Porcelain House on 赤峰道 Chìfēng Dào Chifeng Road is what happens when a collector refuses to keep his trove indoors – a French-style villa sheathed in shards of antique porcelain, from Song-dynasty bowl fragments to Qing famille-rose plates, studded with crystal and guarded by carved stone lions along the roofline. The facade alone carries millions of pieces, set in swirls that turn the walls into a kiln-crazed wave.

The interior keeps the theme at full volume. Four floors spiral through china-set walls, ceiling murals pieced from the same broken ware, staircases edged in bowls, and display cases holding the intact pieces the mosaic work protected – a single building arguing that nothing precious should live behind glass when it could live in daylight.

Loved and argued over in equal measure, the house is the most photographed door in Tianjin. Critics call it busy; visitors call it unforgettable; the queue outside settles the argument most mornings. Read the walls as one long sentence – dynasties, ships, dragons and lotus scrolls spelled out in fragments that other collections would lock away.
A ticket covers all four floors, and thirty minutes is enough for the mosaic overload – an hour if you read every plaque. The house sits mid-way between the cathedral and the river, which makes it the natural hinge between the shopping grid and the bank quarter.
Practicalities
- Tickets are timed-entry; mornings are quietest, weekends queue to the corner.
- The building sits on 赤峰道 Chìfēng Dào Chifeng Road between the cathedral and 解放北路 Jiěfàng Běilù the bank quarter – chain all three in one walk.
- Metro Line 3 to 和平路 Hépíng Lù Heping Road station is four blocks away.
- Photograph the facade from across the street – the mosaic reads best with distance.

Words and Names
瓷房子 Cífángzi the Porcelain House; 赤峰道 Chìfēng Dào Chifeng Road; 古瓷片 gǔ cí piàn antique porcelain shards; 石狮子 shíshīzi the stone lions along the roofline; 张连志 Zhāng Liánzhì the collector who built it. Beyond the mosaic, the same 天津市和平区 Tiānjīn Shì Hépíng Qū Heping District keeps more places worth the detour: 五大道 Wǔ dà dào Wudadao, 民园广场 Mínyuán Guǎngchǎng Minyuan Square, 西开教堂 Xīkāi Jiàotáng Xikai Cathedral, or 解放北路 Jiěfàng Běilù Liberation North Road – four more doors into the same Heping District. Once the house has had its hour, our Heping food map fills the table.
flowcloud would say the Porcelain House is a collector’s argument made architectural: rather than guard seven hundred years of kilns behind alarm glass, he glued them to the street – and Tianjin, rightly, never stopped looking. All checked November 2026.
Getting there: The Porcelain House stands on Chifeng Road – Metro Line 3 to Heping Road station is four blocks away, and the walk passes the old department-store row that makes the approach part of the visit. All checked November 2026.
