Puzhehei Lotus Land: Karst Peaks Standing in a Lake Country of Summer Lotus
青峰倒影浮碧水,万亩荷风送晚凉。Qīng fēng dàoyǐng fú bìshuǐ, wàn mǔ héfēng sòng wǎn liáng – Green peaks mirrored floating on jade water; from ten thousand mu of lotus, a breeze brings the evening cool.
普者黑 Pǔzhěhēi Puzhehei Lotus Land is not one lake with a promenade — it is, to be plain, a karst lake district in 丘北县 Qiūběi Xiàn Qiubei County, in the north of 文山壮族苗族自治州 Wénshān Zhuàngzú Miáozú Zìzhìzhōu Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, whose seat is 文山市 Wénshān Shì Wenshan City. The name comes from the local Yi language and is usually glossed as a pond full of fish and shrimp, and the place is true to it: scores of 孤峰 gūfēng isolated karst peaks — rounded towers left standing as the plain dissolved around them — rise straight out of a scatter of lakes and ponds joined by channels, and the way to move through them is the 柳叶小舟 liǔyè xiǎo zhōu willow-leaf boat, a slim punt that slips under the cliffs and into the reeds. From early summer, roughly June to August, the shallows carry a bloom of 荷花 héhuā lotus reckoned in the tens of thousands of mu, and the water turns green-and-pink for kilometres. What you are actually visiting is a working waterscape of fish ponds, rice and lotus around villages such as 仙人洞村 Xiānréndòng Cūn Xianren Cave Village, home of the 撒尼人 Sǎnírén Sani people of the 彝族 Yízú Yi — and, since the fantasy drama 《三生三世十里桃花》 Sānshēng Sānshì Shílǐ Táohuā Eternal Love (2017) was filmed here, a lake district with a second job as a film set.

The honest grade is “a world-class little karst lakescape on big-group tourism machinery,” and in season the machinery shows. Getting there is the easy half: high-speed trains on the Kunming–Nanning line stop at 普者黑站 Pǔzhěhēi Zhàn Puzhehei station, built for these lakes, and a shuttle or taxi covers the remaining road to the villages (worth confirming the current train timetable and the station-to-lake transfer, both of which shift through the year). On the water, tickets are sold as 游船套票 yóuchuán tàopiào combined boat passes covering lakes, caves and village landings, and in the July–August school holidays the full package has run to a couple of hundred yuan at the top tier (worth confirming the current ticket tiers and what each includes, since the packages have been restructured more than once). Lodging clusters at 仙人洞村 Xiānréndòng Cūn and 普者黑村 Pǔzhěhēi Cūn Puzhehei village, from plain guesthouses to polished 民宿 mínsù, and the whole district is comfortably doable without a car.

The wry truth is that Puzhehei is sold as the fairy-tale lake from the drama, and the water is real while the solitude is not. What is overrated is the middle of a holiday afternoon: boat convoys queueing at the docks, water-fight armadas, lotus banks solid with photographers — this is one of Yunnan’s busiest summer playgrounds, and midday in the school holidays is its worst hour. What is genuinely worth it is the district at its edges: dawn on 青龙山 Qīnglóng Shān Qinglong Hill, where the peaks stand out of mist like islands (worth confirming the path up and its current opening, as access has been adjusted at times), the early and late hours when the tour boats are beached, and the Sani village lanes once the day-trippers have gone. The water fights are real too — you will be soaked whether you enlisted or not, so bag the phone. Best lotus is late June into July, before the peak crush; September is quieter and still green. Come for two nights, take the water early, and let the midday crowds have the lake.
The self-deprecating footnote: I arrived imagining peach-blossom silence from the drama, joined a boat convoy in a rented life jacket, and spent an hour defending my camera from nine-year-olds with water guns — then I climbed 青龙山 Qīnglóng Shān at five the next morning and the peaks stood in still mist over an empty lake, and I forgave the entire water war. 普者黑 Pǔzhěhēi rewards the person who takes the water at dawn and the villages at dusk, and quietly exasperates the one who wants a quiet lake at noon in August. Go for the lotus and the peaks, dodge the middle of the day, and let the drama be the excuse.
Practicalities
- Rating: A karst district of isolated peaks standing in lakes in Qiubei County, Wenshan prefecture; willow-leaf-boat channels, a huge June–August lotus bloom and Sani Yi lake villages — a working waterscape and film location, not a manicured park.
- Tickets: The lake district and villages are open; the boat-and-cave 游船套票 yóuchuán tàopiào combination is charged, historically reaching a couple of hundred yuan at the top tier (worth confirming the current tiers, inclusions and peak-season rules before buying).
Pǔzhěhēi Zhàn on the Kunming–Nanning high-speed line, then a road transfer to the lake villages (worth confirming the shuttle or taxi arrangements).
- Time needed: Two days — one boat-and-cave day, one for 青龙山 Qīnglóng Shān dawn and the villages; a summer overnight beats a day trip by a wide margin.

flowcloud would say that 普者黑 Pǔzhěhēi is Wenshan’s summer lake country — 孤峰 gūfēng karst peaks standing in lakes, 柳叶小舟 liǔyè xiǎo zhōu channels, tens of thousands of mu of lotus from June to August and 仙人洞村 Xiānréndòng Cūn of the 撒尼人 Sǎnírén Sani — and that the honest move is two nights with dawn on 青龙山 Qīnglóng Shān, because the water is genuine while the August midday is a water war, the 游船套票 yóuchuán tàopiào tiers need verifying before you buy, and the place rewards whoever takes the water early while quietly exasperating whoever wants it quiet at noon. All checked October 2026.
Getting there: the Puzhehei scenic area in Qiubei county, about three hours by road or an afternoon train from Kunming (worth confirming the current shuttle between the lake gates and the boat-ticket package); summer for the lotus bloom, any clear morning for the karst peaks from Qinglong Hill. All checked October 2026.
