Xiaonanhai: the Earthquake's Barrier Lake

Yī chǎng dìzhèn, yī zuò yànsāi hú; bìshuǐ yī fāng, xiàtiān yī chù. — One earthquake, one barrier lake; a stretch of green water, one place for summer.

Xiaonanhai (小南海, Xiǎonánhǎi) is a 4A-rated (December 2005) lake at Xiaonanhai town — a barrier lake (地震堰塞湖) formed when an earthquake dammed the river valley, leaving a still, green, mountain-ringed lake that now serves as the county’s summer retreat. Tickets are 60 yuan in both seasons. The lake’s origin is its story: the water is held by a landslide dam thrown up by the quake, which is why the shoreline has the odd, fresh-looking geometry of a young landscape.

The lake’s shape tells the event. A barrier lake forms when a slope collapses into a valley and dams the drainage; the water then fills behind the natural dam, and the drowned valley becomes a lake with a characteristically irregular shoreline and, often, standing timber along the edges. Xiaonanhai is the region’s textbook case — young enough that the dam is still a landform rather than a memory, old enough that the lake has settled into a calm, fish-full, boat-friendly piece of water.

The lake is the county’s heat answer: the elevation and the water keep it cool through the summer, and the local pattern is the lake in the day and the town at dusk. The boat on the lake is the standard visit, and the shore road is the standard walk. Combine it with the Tujia Thirteen Villages nearby, which share the town — the two make one day.

flowcloud would say that the county’s prettiest lake is a disaster’s leftover — and that the earthquake did the landscaping and the ticket office just moved in.
