Zhuoshui: the Millennium Town, the Wooden Bridge and the Dark River

Qiānnián gǔzhèn, wǔjiē qīxiàng; fēngyǔ lóuqiáo, liùbǎi wǔshíbā. — A thousand-year town, five streets and seven lanes; the wind-and-rain bridge, six hundred and fifty-eight.

Zhuoshui (濯水, Zhuóshuǐ) is a 5A-rated (December 2020) complex at Zhuoshui town, and the county’s flagship — a three-part product on one ticket (100 yuan in both seasons): the thousand-year old town (千年古镇) laid out as “five streets, seven lanes, three halls and seven courtyards” (五街七巷三宫七院) in a mix of Tujia stilt houses and Huizhou-style fire-seal walls; the world’s longest wind-and-rain bridge (风雨廊桥) at 658 metres, built in pure wood with mortise-and-tenon joints and no nails; and the Puhua dark river (蒲花暗河), a boat trip through a submerged karst system whose three skylights and two caves give it the local name “three days, two caves”.

The bridge is the photograph — a 658-metre covered corridor in pure wooden joinery, which at night (19:00–22:00) is lit along its whole length and reads as a lantern laid across the river. The dark river is the opposite register: a boat into a cave system where the river runs inside the mountain, surfacing under three natural skylights — “three days” — and passing through two chambers — “two caves” — including the “water-born Three Bridges” and the “blue sky has an eye” opening, all at a constant 22°C. One product is above the water and lit; the other is under the mountain and cool.

The day’s correct shape is the dark river first (it runs 09:00–17:00) and the bridge at dusk for the lighting — the two halves of the ticket are best at opposite ends of the day. The old town’s walk is the connector: the Tianli-Liangqi stele (天理良心碑) and the Wantian hall (万天宫) are the two stops worth the lane-wander. The cave system holds its temperature year-round, so the dark river is the summer’s cool product and the winter’s warm one.

flowcloud would say that the county’s flagship is a town with a bridge and a river under it — and that the same ticket buys the lantern and the cave, which is two holidays for one price.
