The Town Where Water Runs Past Every Door: Qiantong
白溪水绕千家过,卵石巷深岁月长 Báixī shuǐ rào qiān jiā guò, luǎnshí xiàng shēn suìyuè cháng – The Baixi stream winds past a thousand households; deep in the pebble lanes the years run long
前童古镇 Qiántóng Gǔzhèn Qiantong Ancient Town is the Ming-Qing maze in the hills of 宁海县 Nínghǎi Xiàn Ninghai County, under 宁波市 Níngbō Shì Ningbo City – a 700-year-old settlement of the 童氏 Tóng shì Tong clan where the 白溪 Báixī Baixi stream is channeled through every street in stone-lined runs, past doorsteps, under kitchens, feeding the household wells that made the town famous for “water before every gate”. Over a thousand timber-and-brick houses survive in the grid the clan laid out, and the whole plan reads like a family compound scaled to a town: shrines, drum towers, study courtyards and the craft workshops that still carve the festival floats.

The lanes are the museum: pebble-mosaic paving set in patterns, carved-gate courtyards, and the water channels running milky-clear with mountain flow. The 童氏宗祠 Tóng Shì Zōngcí Tong clan hall anchors the grid with its warring-states bronze drums, and the folk-museum rooms keep the town’s five-crafts tradition – wood, bamboo, stone, paint, carving – on working display.

Qiantong’s signature is its festival: the 元宵行会 yuánxiāo xínghuì Lantern Procession, when the clan’s carved drum towers and parade floats – centuries old, gilded, drummed – tour the lanes in a parade that fills the town past midnight. The workshops that build them sit open along the water runs, and a visitor in the right weeks can watch a float being re-gilded between two households’ laundry.
Give it a slow day: the clan hall and museum rooms first, the craft lanes after, and the hill-view terraces at the town’s edge for the roofscape of grey tiles at sunset. The town’s tofu workshops grind through the afternoon, and dinner is the reason food pilgrims come: tofu-fed everything, from the.Double-skin rolls to the famous 前童豆腐 Qiántóng dòufu itself.
Practicalities
- The town core sells one ticket covering the clan hall, museums and craft workshops; the residential lanes beyond stay free.
- Qiantong sits 25 minutes’ drive from Ninghai county town; buses from Ninghai station run hourly, and the expressway from Ningbo takes about an hour.
- Wear grippy shoes – the pebble paving turns slick after rain, which is also when it photographs best.
- The Lantern Procession (lunar 1/14-15) books the town solid a month ahead; every other weekend it keeps its village calm.
