春寒赐浴华清池,温泉水滑洗凝脂。Chūn hán cì yù Huáqīng Chí, wēnquán shuǐ huá xǐ níng zhī – On a cold spring day she was bathed in the pools of Huaqing, where the hot-spring waters are smooth and wash a skin like congealed cream.
热海 Rèhǎi Rehai (“Hot Sea”) is the steaming heart of the Tengchong geothermal field, a valley of hot springs and fumaroles about 8 km southwest of the city, up the gorge of the 澡塘河 Zǎotáng Hé Bath-Pond River. Tengchong is one of the few places in China where a young volcanic field and an active geothermal system overlap, and 热海 is where the heat shows itself most loudly: the whole gorge smells of 硫磺 liúhuáng sulphur, and the trail climbs past vents that hiss and boil. The centrepiece is 大滚锅 Dà Gǔn Guō the Big Boiling Pot, a blue-green pool about 3 m across whose water sits at roughly 96 °C and boils continuously, throwing up a column of steam; beside it, vendors cook eggs in the ground-level steam vents, strung on straw ropes – the origin of the Yunnan saying that eggs are sold strung together. Lower down the path, 珍珠泉 Zhēnzhū Quán Pearl Spring rises in beads of gas, 鼓鸣泉 Gǔmíng Quán Drumming Spring throbs at intervals like a struck drum, and 怀胎井 Huáitāi Jǐng Pregnancy Well is a pair of springs with a folk reputation for fertility. The park is genuinely dramatic, and the sulphur smell is real – bring clothes you do not mind smoking.

The practical core is the walk. Entry to the 火山热海 Huǒshān Rèhǎi Volcano-and-Rehai scenic area, granted the national 5A grade in 2024, is by paid ticket, quoted at about 50 yuan worth confirming; the trail runs 1-2 km up the valley from the gate to 大滚锅 and needs two to three hours at a stroll, on boardwalks and steps. The 浴谷温泉 Yùgǔ Wēnquán Yugu Hot Spring resort inside the area offers proper soaking pools for a separate, much larger fee worth confirming – the park itself is a walk, not a soak. From Tengchong city take the Rehai bus or a taxi: 20-30 minutes and a few yuan by bus, roughly 30 yuan by taxi worth confirming. Go in the dry season, November to April; in the rains the gorge is slick and the steam so thick that photographs of the springs vanish into white. Mornings are best, both for the light and because the afternoon coaches from the city arrive by lunch.

The rhythm is geological and honest. This is a working geothermal field fed by heat that is still down there – the volcanic system that built the cones to the north is treated as dormant rather than dead, and the springs are monitored rather than managed. Order the walk from the gate upward: 鼓鸣泉, 珍珠泉, 姊妹泉 Zǐmèi Quán Sister Springs, 怀胎井, then 大滚锅 at the head of the valley, where the stone viewing platform fills with steam on cool mornings. Eat the steam eggs (a few yuan each worth confirming), and discount the claims about medicinal waters – these pools are hot and sulphurous, not European spa water. If you want a bath, the rustic sulphur bathhouses of 黄瓜箐 Huángguāqìng Cucumber Valley nearby charge a few yuan and are where locals actually soak worth confirming. Everything is humid, the boardwalks are worn smooth, and the steam gets into every lens you own. All checked October 2026.
