Two waterways braid the flat land of Rongchang District in western Chongqing into a single green net — the 荣峰河 Róngfēng Hé and the 濑溪河 Làixī Hé. Together they give the district its slow, watery grammar: riverside parks, footbridges, and the easy pleasure of a boat on still water.

The Laixi is the older, larger artery — the same river that laps the foot of Wanling Ancient Town downstream — and it has carried boats and trade through this corner of Sichuan–Chongqing for centuries. The Rongfeng is the smaller stream that threads the district seat itself, and in recent years both have been cleaned and lined with walking paths and planted banks. What you get now is a town that can be walked edge to water: promenades, slender footbridges arching the channels, and widened stretches where small boats putter. It is unshowy infrastructure, but it changes how the place feels — cooler in summer, livelier at dusk.

The two rivers suit different moods. The Rongfeng, running through the urban core, is the everyday river — morning walkers, evening strollers, the occasional paddle or rental boat near the parks. The Laixi, broader and quieter, is the one to follow out toward Wanling, where the current slows and the old town rises on its bluff. Both are best on foot or by bike along the banks; the paths connect parks and bridges so a loop is easy to piece together without a plan.

For a travel writer the appeal is precisely the lack of spectacle. These are working, lived-in waterways, not scenic gorges, and they reward a slow afternoon more than a checklist. Bring them together with Wanling upstream and the craft towns inland, and Rongchang reads as a small district built around water and handmade things.

What the Locals Know
The rivers are public and free to walk year-round; the planted banks are most comfortable in spring and autumn, while summer evenings are busy and a little humid. Mornings are quiet for walking, and dusk brings strollers and the best light on the water. The Rongfeng promenades are walkable from the district center, and the Laixi is easiest to reach toward Wanling to the southeast. Boating depends on water level and the season, so treat it as a maybe rather than a plan, and wear for walking — the paths are long and flat but exposed in midday sun.
