The Reformer Under the Trees: Seyuan Garden in Nantong

啬园松柏藏一志,江海经营到此眠 Sèyuán sōngbǎi cáng yī zhì, jiānghǎi jīngyíng dào cǐ mián – Pines in Seyuan keep one resolve; a lifetime of river-and-sea enterprise sleeps here

正文:啬园 Sè Yuán Seyuan Garden is the tomb and memorial garden of Zhang Jian, the man whose mills, schools, museum and city planning made modern Nantong. Set in a quiet wooded park south of the old city, it combines a monumental grave, a bronze statue, old cypresses and a small lake with painted corridors – part cemetery, part classical garden, and the calmest place in the city to think about what one person built here.

The tomb axis is the heart of the visit: a white statue above the stone-built grave, broad steps, and commemorative inscriptions from the century since his death. Visitors come for the history rather than the scenery, but the cypress shade keeps the whole precinct quiet even on busy weekends.

Around the grave the garden loosens into water – a painted corridor along the lake, a boat-shaped pavilion, rockeries and willow banks. It is a deliberate shift from the reformer’s public works to the Jiangnan garden tradition, and the reflections give the park its softer photographs.

Allow an hour, and read the museum quarter first so the name on the tomb carries the full story: Nantong Museum, the textile mills, the schools and the Haohe embankments all belong to the same project. Seyuan makes a natural final stop for a Zhang Jian day.

Practicalities

Beyond the trees, the same 南通市 Nántōng Shì Nantong City keeps more places worth the detour: 濠河 Háo Hé the Haohe River for the old ring, 狼山 Láng Shān Langshan Hill for the Yangtze view, 南通博物苑 Nántōng Bówùyuàn Nantong Museum for the collections, or 水绘园 Shuǐhuì Yuán Shuihui Garden for the water-painted retreat – four more doors into the same 南通市 Nántōng Shì Nantong City. Once the grave is found, our Nantong food map fills the day.

Words and Names

flowcloud would say Seyuan is a founder’s last urban plan: a tomb, a lake, and enough pine shade to let the city he built go on arguing without him. All checked November 2026.

Getting there: Seyuan Garden sits on the southern edge of Nantong, a short taxi or bus ride from Langshan Hill; the park keeps daytime hours with a modest ticket, and weekday mornings are almost empty. All checked November 2026.
