Shenlong Gorge

Shenlong Gorge cuts a deep Y-shaped cleft into the karst hills south of Nanchuan’s district seat, a cool green world of tiered waterfalls and vine-draped cliffs. The clear creek that runs through it makes summer the season to visit, whether for wading, a short raft, or just standing in the spray. It is close enough to town for a half-day, yet wild enough to feel far from the city.

The trail follows the water as it drops through a series of small falls, each pool a different shade of green. Vines hang from the rock in thick curtains, and the shade keeps the air cool even on hot days. Wooden walkways and stone steps keep the path easy, so families and casual walkers can enjoy it without real climbing.

Beyond the walk, the gorge is a place to slow down. Shallow stretches of the creek are safe for wading, and a camping pitch lets visitors stay overnight under the cliffs. The sound of water is constant, and the light filtering through the leaves gives the whole place a soft, enclosed feel that is hard to find near Chongqing.

Because it sits south of the seat at Yong’an Village in Nanping Town, the gorge pairs naturally with other southern sights. It is busiest on summer weekends, when the wading pools fill with families, but on a weekday morning you may have the trail almost to yourself. Give it two or three hours, and bring something to sit on if you plan to linger by the water.

Words and Names

  • Shenlong Gorge (神龙峡) — the deep Y-shaped karst gorge south of Nanchuan.
  • Nanping Town (南平镇) — the town south of the district seat where the gorge lies.
  • Yong’an Village (永安村) — the village within Nanping Town that hosts the gorge.

What the Locals Know

Summer is the obvious time, but locals say the best light for the waterfalls is early morning before the day-trippers arrive, and the water is coldest and clearest right then. Wear sandals with grip if you plan to wade, because the creek bed is rocky and the stones are slick. The gorge is cooler than town by several degrees, which is exactly why people come in July and August.

Bring a change of clothes for children and a dry bag for anything electronic, since the spray reaches the path at the lower falls. Camping is simple here, so pack your own food and water rather than expecting much at the gate. Pair it with Lixiang Lake nearby for a relaxed southern loop, or with a longer hike if you want more exercise.

The entrance fee is listed from 20 yuan, which makes it one of the cheaper outings in the district, though extras like rafting or camping may cost more on site. Weekends fill up, so a weekday visit is the local secret for a quiet walk.
