The Island of a Thousand Quarry Caves: Shepan

千洞连环藏海岛,斧凿千年石作城 Qiān dòng liánhuán cáng hǎidǎo, fǔzáo qiānnián shí zuò chéng – A thousand linked caves hide on the sea island; a thousand years of chisels made the stone a city

蛇蟠岛 Shépān Dǎo Shepan Island rides the mudflats of 三门 Sānmén Sanmen Bay as Taizhou’s largest island, and its ground is hollow: fourteen centuries of stone-cutting left more than 1,360 linked quarry caverns honeycombing the hillside, which is why the old maps label it 千洞岛 Qiāndòng Dǎo the Island of a Thousand Caves. The stone went out for harbor walls and temple pillars all along the coast; what stayed is a museum of chisel marks, slab galleries and light shafts, now dressed as two parks – 野人洞 Yěrén Dòng Wild Man Cave with its ancient cut galleries and stone-window museum, and 海盗村 Hǎidào Cūn Pirate Village, a cavern complex staged around the privateers who once used these coves.

Wild Man Cave is the geology lesson: galleries where the roof follows the stone seam, rooms cut square for storage, and the 黄泥洞古村 Huángní Dòng Gǔcūn Huangni old village outside where every house wall, floor and pigsty is built of offcut slabs – a whole settlement quarried from its own hill. The island’s stone windows, carved lattice panels of local slate, hang in the museum here and in estate walls all over the county.

Pirate Village plays the other history: the cave-harbor story of 方国珍 Fāng Guózhēn Fang Guozhen, the Yuan-dynasty salt smuggler who became the coast’s first big privateer, staged through carved halls, treasure rooms and a theatrical stone ship. The kids love it; the rock is the real star – every hall opens onto another, and the temperature drops ten degrees the moment you step inside.

The island’s modern act is mud and sky: the 滑泥公园 Huání Gōngyuán mud-flat park hands you waders for the tidal flats where 三门青蟹 Sānmén qīngxiè Sanmen mud crabs fatten, and the seawall road runs past oyster racks and egret fields to the northern tip. Eat on the island – the crab here is the county’s calling card, steamed with ginger or stewed into rice.

Practicalities

  • The two cave parks sell separate tickets around 50 yuan each; a combined pass covers both plus the stone-window museum.
  • Bring a layer: the caves run cool in every season, and the mud-flat park rents waders – do not bring shoes you love.
  • The island connects to the mainland by causeway; buses from 三门县 Sānmén Xiàn Sanmen county town run about forty minutes.
  • Mud-flat season runs late spring to early autumn; the crab peaks in autumn – time both if you can.

Words and Names

蛇蟠岛 Shépān Dǎo Shepan Island, “serpent-coil island”, Taizhou’s largest; 千洞岛 Qiāndòng Dǎo the Island of a Thousand Caves, its old name; 野人洞 Yěrén Dòng Wild Man Cave, the quarry-gallery park; 海盗村 Hǎidào Cūn Pirate Village, the privateer-history caverns; 三门青蟹 Sānmén qīngxiè the Sanmen mud crab, the bay’s famous table crab. Beyond the thousand caves, the same 台州市 Tāizhōu Shì Taizhou City keeps more places worth the detour: 天台山 Tiāntái Shān the temple mountain of the Tiantai school, 神仙居 Shénxiānjū the rhyolite peaks of Xianju, 临海古城 Línhǎi Gǔchéng the Ming city wall at Linghai, or 石塘渔村 Shítáng Yúcūn the granite fishing village of Wenling – four more doors into the same 台州市 Tāizhōu Shì Taizhou City. Once the crabs have had their steamer, our Taizhou food map fills the table.

flowcloud would say Shepan is an island that mined itself: a hill full of rooms nobody built, a village paved with its own leftovers, and crabs fat in the mud the chisels never reached – the quarry closed, the architecture stayed. All checked November 2026.

Getting there: Shepan Island connects by causeway from Sanmen county town – buses cover the forty-minute run, the two cave parks sit ten minutes apart by shuttle, and rail travelers reach Sanmen via Taizhou or Ningbo with one change. All checked November 2026.
