Where China’s Millennium Dawn Landed: Shitang Fishing Village

石屋枕海千年梦,曙光先照小箬村 Shíwū zhěn hǎi qiānnián mèng, shǔguāng xiān zhào Xiǎoruò Cūn – Stone houses pillow the sea through a thousand years of dreams; the first dawn lights Xiaoruo Village

石塘渔村 Shítáng Yúcūn Shitang Fishing Village hangs on the granite headlands of 温岭 Wēnlǐng Wenling, where the mainland first meets the year: on 1 January 2000 the millennium’s first mainland sunrise landed here, and the 千年曙光碑 Qiānnián Shǔguāng Bēi Millennium Dawn Monument has been raising cameras into the sea ever since. The village itself is older art – dense terraces of stone houses roofed in slate and lashed against typhoon winds, fishing harbors packed with blue-hulled boats, and an out-to-sea rhythm that still empties the lanes before six. Local builders call the creed 屋咬山,山抱石 wū yǎo shān, shān bào shí – the houses bite the hill, the hill hugs the stone.

小箬村 Xiǎoruò Cūn Xiaoruo is the paint-box quarter: a whole hillside of houses repainted in candy pinks, blues and yellows for the photo era, stepped down to a harbor breakwater. It is the most photographed grid in Taizhou and worth an hour’s climb for the rooftop views – go at opening, because by ten the lanes are a fashion shoot.

The older village keeps the granite honesty: 五岙 Wǔ’ào and 后山 Hòushān lanes where stone houses pile three stories up stairways too narrow for carts, the old sea walls, and the 大奏鼓 dà zòu gǔ drum dance – a fishermen’s carnival dance performed in festival dress and face paint, a national intangible heritage that shakes the harbor every 开渔节 kāiyú jié fishing-season opening festival in September.

The coastal road ties it together: an eight-kilometer 绿道 lǜdào greenway runs the clifftops from the Dawn Monument past 金沙滩 Jīnshātān the golden beach to 洞下沙滩 Dòngxià Shātān the big sand beach at Dongxia, with viewing decks over every cove. Rent an e-bike in the village, ride the headlands at dawn, and eat your way back – the harbor stalls shuck oysters and boil the morning’s crabs by nine.

Practicalities

  • The Dawn Monument area is free; the greenway e-bike rentals run by the hour from the village-center stalls.
  • Sunrise is the business: winter dawns from the Monument terraces, summer dawns from the Dongxia beach – check tide tables for swimmers’ hours.
  • 温岭站 Wēnlǐng Zhàn Wenling station is forty minutes by bus or taxi; the last mountain lanes are narrow – drive them slowly.
  • September’s fishing-season festival brings the drum dance and the fleet out together; rooms book weeks ahead that weekend.

Words and Names

石塘 Shítáng Shitang, “stone pond”, the granite fishing town; 千年曙光碑 Qiānnián Shǔguāng Bēi Millennium Dawn Monument, marking the mainland’s first sunrise of 2000; 小箬村 Xiǎoruò Cūn Xiaoruo, the painted hillside quarter; 大奏鼓 dà zòu gǔ the Great Drum dance, fishermen’s carnival heritage; 屋咬山 wū yǎo shān “houses bite the hill”, the local building creed. Beyond the dawn monument, the same 台州市 Tāizhōu Shì Taizhou City keeps more places worth the detour: 天台山 Tiāntái Shān the temple mountain of the Tiantai school, 神仙居 Shénxiānjū the rhyolite peaks of Xianju, 临海古城 Línhǎi Gǔchéng the Ming city wall at Linghai, or 蛇蟠岛 Shépān Dǎo the quarry caves of Sanmen Bay – four more doors into the same 台州市 Tāizhōu Shì Taizhou City. Once the tide has turned you loose, our Taizhou food map fills the table.

flowcloud would say Shitang is a village built for weather: slate roofs laced against typhoons, lanes cut for crabs and carts, and then one morning in 2000 the calendar chose it – and the stone houses just kept standing there, photogenic by accident and famous on schedule. All checked November 2026.

Getting there: Shitang runs forty minutes by bus or taxi from Wenling high-speed station on the coastal line – the last lanes are narrow, the greenway links the quarters on foot, and e-bike stands wait at the village center. All checked November 2026.
