Wanshou Mountain: the Female General's Battlefield Above the Seat

Míngdài nǚjiāngjūn, Wànshòu shān shàng; shízhù yī duì, lǎn jìn xiànchéng. — A Ming-dynasty female general, up on Wanshou Mountain; one pair of stone pillars, the whole county seat in view.

Wanshou Mountain (万寿山, Wànshòu Shān) is a 4A-rated (March 2020) historical mountain at Nanbin Street, directly above the county seat — 65 yuan in both seasons. Its subject is Qin Liangyu (秦良玉), the Ming-dynasty female general who was a native of Shizhu, and the mountain holds her battlefield remains (古战场) alongside the male and female stone pillars (男女石柱) that gave the county its name. The summit’s other product is the view back over the county seat.

Qin Liangyu is the county’s claim on national history: a Ming-dynasty commander who led troops in the empire’s frontier campaigns and is one of the few women in Chinese history to hold independent military command. Shizhu keeps her memory because she was born here, and the mountain’s battlefield remains and the stone pillars are the physical anchors of that memory. The pillars’ pairing — male and female — is the local reading of the county’s name, and the general’s story gives it a human face.

The mountain is the county seat’s own climb — the after-dinner walk with a historical theme, and the view over the seat is the reward. The battlefield remains are the visit’s spine; the pillars are the photograph. Allow a half-day for the climb and the summit circuit.

flowcloud would say that the county’s name is a pair of stone pillars and its history is a woman general — and that the mountain above the seat holds both.
