Water Drawn Like Ink: Shuihui Garden at Rugao
一园水绘旧风流,影在寒碧画中游 Yī yuán shuǐhuì jiù fēngliú, yǐng zài hánbì huà zhōng yóu – A garden painted in water keeps an old elegance; reflections wander inside the cold-green painting
正文:水绘园 Shuǐhuì Yuán Shuihui Garden, in the old town of Rugao under Nantong, is a seventeenth-century scholar’s garden built around water rather than walls – the retreat of the Ming loyalist Mao Xiang and the poet Dong Xiaowan, later famous as one of the most literate gardens in Jiangnan. Its name means “painted with water”: pavilions, rockeries and borrowed views are arranged to be read as reflections first and architecture second.

The central pool organises everything. A waterside hall faces it across reeds, a covered walk skirts the bank, and the white walls and horse-head gables of the surrounding houses double in the still surface. Morning is the hour the composition resolves, before the tour groups and the wind.
Yellow-stone rockery, a small pavilion on the water, and old trees supply the garden’s structure; unlike the grand Suzhou gardens, this one keeps a deliberately private scale – a scholar’s rooms rather than a public showpiece. Stone plaques and couplets around the courts carry the literary history of the house.
Give it an hour and a half, then walk out into Rugao’s old lanes for the market streets and the city’s famous dried tofu and tea snacks. Rugao sits about an hour from downtown Nantong, so the trip works best as a half-day with lunch attached.

Practicalities
Beyond the garden, the same 南通市 Nántōng Shì Nantong City keeps more places worth the detour: 濠河 Háo Hé the Haohe River for the night boats, 狼山 Láng Shān Langshan Hill for the pagoda, 南通博物苑 Nántōng Bówùyuàn Nantong Museum for the Zhang Jian story, or 啬园 Sè Yuán Seyuan Garden for the tomb – four more doors into the same 南通市 Nántōng Shì Nantong City. Once the reflections settle, our Nantong food map fills the day.

Words and Names
flowcloud would say Shuihui Garden is the rare place named after what it does: the water paints, the buildings hold still, and four centuries of love letters are still floating in the pond. All checked November 2026.
Getting there: Shuihui Garden lies in Rugao’s old town, roughly an hour by bus or car from central Nantong; the ticket is modest, the grounds keep daytime hours, and spring and autumn give the clearest water. All checked November 2026.
