太阳河国家公园 Tàiyánghé Guójiā Gōngyuán the Sun River National Park occupies the southeastern slopes of 思茅区 Sīmáo Qū Simao District, about 40 km and a 45-minute drive from the 普洱 Pǔ’ěr city seat, on the northern edge of the tropics. The valley has been sold under three names in twenty years – 菜阳河 Càiyánghé national forest park, then 普洱国家公园犀牛坪 Pǔ’ěr Guójiā Gōngyuán Xīniúpíng the rhino-slope park, now 太阳河 worth confirming – but the forest has not changed: roughly 97 percent of the listed 216 km² worth confirming is closed canopy, the largest and most intact block of 南亚热带季风常绿阔叶林 Nán-Yà Rèdài Jìfēng Chánglǜ Kuòyèlín south-subtropical monsoon evergreen broadleaf forest left in the country. The draw is the animals, and the novelty is that they are not behind bars: a small herd of 白犀牛 báixīniú white rhinos grazes a wetland meadow where you can watch, from a metre away, two tonnes of South African herbivore breathing; several dozen 小熊猫 xiǎoxióngmāo red pandas roam a boardwalk loop and will climb onto your shoulder for an apple out of the 20-yuan feed pack; and the same trail system passes 蜂猴 fēnglóu slow lorises, 长臂猿 chángbìyuán gibbons, 熊狸 xiónglǐ binturongs, troops of 猕猴 míhóu macaques and the first-class protected 爪哇野牛 Zhuāwā Yěniú banteng. Some 800-odd wild vertebrate species worth confirming are recorded in the valley, which is why the park’s own literature cannot stop calling it a gene bank.
The honest note is that this is a commercial wildlife park with a forest attached, priced accordingly. The gate ticket is quoted at 100 yuan worth confirming, with half price for students, 6-to-18-year-olds and 60-to-69-year-olds, and free entry for children under 1.2 m, over-70s, serving soldiers and visitors with disabilities worth confirming; the popular combo adds the round-trip sightseeing car for 135-150 yuan worth confirming, and you will want it, because the walkable route runs about 12 km there and back. Direct shuttles leave from 普洱站 Pǔ’ěr Zhàn the high-speed rail station and the 鸿丰客运站 Hóngfēng Kèyùnzhàn city bus station for about 15 yuan, 40 minutes worth confirming; taxis cost 50-100 yuan each way and the return leg is genuinely hard to find, and drivers take the 昆磨高速 Kūnmò Gāosù expressway to the 南岛河 Nándǎo Hé exit. Sleep is either back in 思茅 Sīmǎo town, 45 minutes down the road, or in a cluster of forest 民宿 mínsù guesthouses and one in-park resort whose balconies look straight into the canopy worth confirming.
Come in the morning, on a dry day. Rain drives the red pandas into shelter and turns the boardwalk slick, and the first two hours after opening are when the forest is cool and the animals are actually doing something; in high summer 思茅 Sīmáo simmers in the thirties while the park interior holds near 23°C worth confirming, which makes this the prefecture’s default 避暑 bìshǔ escape. Wear long sleeves and closed shoes, carry repellent, and know that the one genuinely stressful spot in the park is the apple queue at the red-panda loop. The park’s 湿地餐厅 shīdì cāntīng wetland restaurant inside feeds the day-tripper crowd at about 60 yuan a head worth confirming, which is park pricing but edible; the smarter move is to carry lunch and eat it on the boardwalk benches. Budget three to four hours for the main circuit with the car, or a full day if you add the afternoon 普洱茶 pǔ’ěrchá tea-picking session, the 植物砸染 zhíwù zárǎn plant-dye workshop or the night walk with infrared torches for 萤火虫 yínghuǒchóng fireflies and owls worth confirming.
