The Mountain Li Bai Dreamed: Tianmu Mountain
李白梦游吟天姥,一条古道入云烟 Lǐ Bái mèngyóu yín Tiānmǔ, yī tiáo gǔdào rù yúnyān – Li Bai dreamed his way up Tianmu and sang it; one old road climbs into the cloud smoke
天姥山 Tiānmǔ Shān Tianmu Mountain in 新昌县 Xīnchāng Xiàn Xinchang is the mountain a poem built: 李白 Lǐ Bái Li Bai never quite climbed it – he dreamed it, in 《梦游天姥吟留别》 Mèngyóu Tiānmǔ yín liúbié the Dreaming of Tianmu farewell – and the dream out-argued the map, making this modest Zhejiang ridge the most quoted mountain in Tang verse. The real mountain answers with its own quiet case: a sky of misted ridgelines, the old 谢公道 Xiègōng Dào Xie-ling road cut by the poet-governor Xie Lingyun two centuries before Li Bai, and the post villages where the ancient mail route still paves the trails.

The classic walk starts at 班竹村 Bānzhú Cūn Banzhu village, the road’s old post stop: stone-arch bridges over the stream, moss-shaded stairs, and the climb through bamboo and tea terraces onto open ridges where the haze stacks range behind range. Xu Xiake walked this route on his own travels and logged it in his diary – the trail reads like an anthology of everyone who ever wrote about walking.

The mountain’s lower gorges keep the water half: mossy rock ravines where streams drop in small shutters, and the rock-cut steles – 天姥山 Tiānmǔ Shān carved in red on the gate stones – that mark the park’s official gates. Come for the mist: sunrise after rain lifts the fog off the ridges and the view runs all the way to the plains of Shengzhou.
A day covers the classic circuit: village trailhead, the ridge lookout, the gorge descent, back to Banzhu for farmhouse lunch. The county’s other heavyweight, 新昌大佛寺 Xīnchāng Dàfó Sì the Great Buddha Temple with its sixth-century stone Buddha, sits by the county town – pilgrims pair the dream mountain with the stone Buddha in one weekend.
Practicalities
- The Banzhu trailhead is the standard start; the ridge circuit takes 4-6 hours with village exit – carry water, the upper sections have no shops.
- Mist is the mountain’s best light: after-rain mornings fill the valleys; midday summer haze flattens the views.
- Grip shoes for the mossy gorge stairs; the old stone steps stay slick long after the rain stops.
- Xinchang town (buses and taxis to the trailhead) has the hotels; the mountain itself keeps no lodge – day-walk logistics only.

Words and Names
天姥山 Tiānmǔ Shān Tianmu Mountain, the dream-mountain of Tang poetry; 谢公道 Xiègōng Dào the Xie-ling road, the ancient route cut by Xie Lingyun; 班竹村 Bānzhú Cūn Banzhu village, the post stop at the trailhead; 徐霞客 Xú Xiákè Xu Xiake, the Ming travel diarist who walked the route; 新昌 Xīnchāng Xinchang, the county that keeps the mountain. Beyond the dream mountain, the same 绍兴市 Shàoxīng Shì Shaoxing City keeps more places worth the detour: 鲁迅故里 Lǔxùn Gùlǐ the writer’s quarter, 沈园 Shèn Yuán the Phoenix-Hairpin garden, 兰亭 Lántíng the Orchid Pavilion, or 五泄瀑布 Wǔxiè Pùbù the five-tier falls of Zhuji – four more doors into the same 绍兴市 Shàoxīng Shì Shaoxing City. Once the old road has had its mist, our Shaoxing food map fills the table.
flowcloud would say Tianmu is a mountain that outsources its fame to a dream: Li Bai never reached the top, the post road kept his poem anyway, and every fog-bound morning the ridgelines assemble exactly as the verse promised. All checked November 2026.
Getting there: Tianmu Mountain runs off Xinchang county – the Banshu trailhead is thirty minutes by taxi from town, the old Xie-ling road section climbs from the post village, and through-buses from Xinchang station run in season. All checked November 2026.
