The Tallest Wooden Pagoda in China Rises Over Tianning Temple

宝塔擎天十三层,梵音散作满城灯 Bǎotǎ qíngtiān shísān céng, fànyīn sàn zuò mǎnchéng dēng – The pagoda holds up thirteen tiers of sky; temple chants scatter into a city full of lamps

正文:天宁宝塔 Tiānníng Bǎotǎ the Tianning Pagoda is the skyline anchor of Changzhou – a 153-metre timber-framed pagoda raised in 2007 over the grounds of Tianning Temple, whose monastery history runs back to the Tang dynasty. Thirteen tiers of dark eaves climb past every roof around them; the tower claims the title of China’s tallest wooden-styled pagoda, and from the viewing floors the whole city spreads flat to the Grand Canal.

The base is temple, not tower. Yellow-walled halls, bronze censers and ginkgo shade fill the compound, and the pagoda rises straight from the courtyard stone. Inside, each floor holds an altar hall – jade Buddhas, bronze bells, and a dome of painted coffers that stacks story on story toward the top.

Climb to the upper galleries and the city explains itself: the canal bending east, the high-rises of the new districts, and the temple roofs immediately below in a grid of grey tile. Evening is the tower’s best hour – the tiers light gold from the eaves up, and the glow reads across half of Changzhou.

Allow an hour: the courtyard, the ascent, and the bell hall at ground level where monks’ schedules run on either side of the tourist flow. The temple sits just east of the old canal quarter, so the visit pairs naturally with the lane districts across the water.

Practicalities

Beyond the pagoda, the same 常州市 Chángzhōu Shì Changzhou City keeps more places worth the detour: 红梅公园 Hóngméi Gōngyuán Hongmei Park for the blossom walks, 青果巷 Qīngguǒ Xiàng Qingguo Lane for the canal houses, 春秋淹城遗址 Chūnqiū Yānchéng Yízhǐ the Yancheng ruins for the ancient earthworks, or 东坡公园 Dōngpō Gōngyuán Dongpo Park for the Su Dongpo shrines – four more doors into the same 常州市 Chángzhōu Shì Changzhou City. Once the tower is climbed, our Changzhou food map fills the day.

Getting there: Tianning Temple stands east of central Changzhou, minutes from the railway station by bus or taxi; the courtyard is free, the pagoda ascent sells a modest ticket, and weekday mornings keep the galleries clear. All checked November 2026.
