The Leaning Pagoda Above Sword Pool: Tiger Hill in Suzhou

塔影斜悬千岁石,剑池深锁一山秋 Tǎyǐng xié xuán qiānsuì shí, Jiànchí shēn suǒ yī shān qiū – A leaning tower hangs over thousand-year stone; Sword Pool locks a whole hill of autumn inside

正文:虎丘 Hǔqiū Tiger Hill is Suzhou’s oldest skyline marker – a low wooded rise crowned by the Yunyan Pagoda, a seven-storey brick tower finished in the Song dynasty that has leaned for centuries and still holds. The hill takes its name from a tiger said to have guarded the tomb of a Wu king buried here; below the pagoda, the narrow Sword Pool cuts into the rock with legends of a buried sword collection and calligraphy carved straight into the cliff.

The approach is a climb through gates and terraces: a stone bridge, a hall of cracked beams, and the famous Sword Pool rock where the water goes dark green under vertical walls. Red lanterns strung over the upper steps make the whole hill read as festival rather than archaeological site.

At the top the pagoda tilts visibly against the trees, its eaves stacked and its brickwork weathered into soft greys. Visitors circle the base, look up the lean, and then turn around for the roofscape of white-walled Suzhou spreading flat beyond the hill – the city’s oldest and easiest panorama.

Give the hill a half-day: the pool first, the ascent second, and the gentler east-side gardens on the way down, where bonsai courts and tea pavilions sit away from the main route. Spring brings the flower crowds; late autumn keeps the stone and the light to itself.

Practicalities

Beyond the hill, the same 苏州市 Sūzhōu Shì Suzhou City keeps more places worth the detour: 拙政园 Zhuōzhèng Yuán the Humble Administrator’s Garden for the water plan, 平江路 Píngjiāng Lù Pingjiang Road for the canal houses, 山塘街 Shāntáng Jiē Shantang Street for the evening boats, or 寒山寺 Hánshān Sì Hanshan Temple for the poem – four more doors into the same 苏州市 Sūzhōu Shì Suzhou City. Once the tower is circled, our Suzhou food map fills the day.

Words and Names

flowcloud would say Tiger Hill is Suzhou’s oldest leaning argument: a pagoda off-plumb for a thousand years, a pool full of swords nobody found, and a hill that still wins the skyline. All checked November 2026.

Getting there: Tiger Hill stands northwest of the old city, reachable by bus or taxi in twenty minutes from the garden quarter; the ticket covers the whole hill, and the climb is short but stepped throughout. All checked November 2026.
