金沙劈山去,虎跳石留名。Jīnshā pī shān qù, hǔtiàoshí liú míng – The Jinsha splits the mountain; the tiger-leap stone keeps the name.
虎跳峡 Hǔtiào Xiá Tiger Leaping Gorge is the cut the 金沙江 Jīnshā Jiāng Jinsha – the upper Yangtze – makes between 玉龙雪山 Yùlóng Xuěshān (5,596 m) on the Lijiang side and 哈巴雪山 Hābā Xuěshān (5,396 m) on the Diqing side: about 23 km of canyon with a 3,900 m vertical drop, a narrowest point of only 20-odd metres, average flow near 1,800 m³/s and a 213 m fall inside the gorge. It divides into three characters – 上虎跳 Shànghǔtiào the upper gorge, the developed viewpoint section where the 13-m 虎跳石 Hǔtiàoshí tiger-leap rock splits the current in two; 中虎跳 Zhōnghǔtiào the middle gorge, reefs and the 满天星 Mǎntiānxīng “starry sky” shoals, eighteen rapids in under 5 km; and 下虎跳 Xiàhǔtiào the lower gorge, wide, calm and farmland-flat. A national 4A scenic area open to the public since 1992, it sits in the core of the 三江并流 Sānjiāng Bìngliú Three Parallel Rivers World Natural Heritage area, just downstream of the 长江第一湾 Chángjiāng Dìyī Wān First Bend at 石鼓 Shígǔ where the river turns from south to east. The ticketed 上虎跳 Shànghǔtiào park runs about 45 yuan, and the honest shape is a canyon you can take in an hour from a platform or two days from a trail.

The mechanism is the drop. Above 石鼓 Shígǔ the Jinsha runs south; at the First Bend it wheels east and has to lose 220 m over the 16 km between the upper mouth (about 1,800 m) and the lower mouth (about 1,630 m), an average gradient near 13.8 per thousand – the steepest reach of the whole river – so it cuts instead of wandering, and the gorge walls stay near-vertical young “V” country. The name is the legend: a tiger, hunted, made the leap across the river on the 13-m rock at the narrows, and the stone kept the name. The walking line is the other half of the place – the 高路 Gāolù high trail, billed among the world’s classic treks, runs about 27 km and two days one night from 纳西雅阁 Nàxī Yàgé up the 28道拐 Èrshíbā Dàoguǎi 28 switchbacks past 茶马客栈 Chámǎ Kèzhàn and 中途客栈 Zhōngtú Kèzhàn (Halfway) and the 龙洞瀑布 Lóngdòng Pùbù to 张老师客栈 Zhāng Lǎoshī Kèzhàn and down into 中虎跳 Zhōnghǔtiào – a route with inns and supplies the whole way, which is why beginners finish it. The river route below, from either the Diqing side (张老师家 Zhāng Lǎoshī Jiā) or the Lijiang side (核桃园 Hétaoyuán), drops to the water on stone steps. The comparison with 玉龙雪山 Yùlóng Xuěshān up the road is exact: the mountain is the view from above, the gorge is the view from the bottom.

The local pattern is seasonal and early. April-June and September-October are the windows – moderate water, fewer rockfalls, the 虎跳石 Hǔtiàoshí visible in full – while the summer flood season is loud and the winter is dry and cold at altitude. The 上虎跳 Shànghǔtiào park sits on the Diqing side in 虎跳峡镇 Hǔtiào Xiá Zhèn, 香格里拉市 Xiānggélǐlā Shì – about 90-100 km and two hours from Lijiang old town by bus or charter, and a taxi is the practical way to pair it with the 高路 Gāolù trailhead at 桥头 Qiáotóu. Wear shoes with grip: the stone is wet year-round from spray, the gorge is a wind tunnel, and the difference between the sun and the shade is a jacket either way. Do not walk the trails in rain – the walls shed rock – and carry your own water, because the trail inns sell it at trail prices. Day-trippers should take the earliest bus, do the park’s stepped viewpoint before the coaches, and be off before the afternoon wind; trekkers should book the 高路 Gāolù inns ahead in season, since the beds on the skyline are the scarce commodity, not the view. The gorge is also the one Lijiang-area walk where the weather is the ticket: the platforms close when the river is in flood and the trail closes when the walls are shedding, and the honest plan carries a spare half-day in case the mountain says no. Bring a pole if you take the 28道拐 Èrshíbā Dàoguǎi – the switchbacks are unrelenting and the air is thin at the trail’s high point – and pay the trail inns’ 晚餐 wǎncān dinner price without argument, because a hot meal at 2,500 m at the end of a switchback day is worth whatever the menu says.
Practicalities
- Rating: National 4A scenic area, open to the public since 1992, and located in the core zone of the 三江并流 Sānjiāng Bìngliú Three Parallel Rivers World Natural Heritage property.
- Tickets: The ticketed 上虎跳 Shànghǔtiào park is 45 yuan adult (combos with the 平步青云梯 Píngbù Qīngyún Tī lift run from about 125). The 高路 Gāolù and 中虎跳 Zhōnghǔtiào trails charge no entry, but the trail inns and the 中虎跳 Zhōnghǔtiào step routes are paid locally.
- Address: 迪庆州香格里拉市虎跳峡镇 Hǔtiào Xiá Zhèn, with the 上虎跳 Shànghǔtiào park on the Diqing side and the 桥头 Qiáotóu trailhead for the 高路 Gāolù; tell a driver “虎跳峡上虎跳” for the park or “桥头 Qiáotóu” for the trailhead. It is about 90-100 km and 2 hours from Lijiang old town, and Lijiang-side trailheads (核桃园 Hétéoyuán) sit down the 丽香 Lìxiāng road.
- Time needed: Half a day for the 上虎跳 Shànghǔtiào park; a full day for the 中虎跳 Zhōnghǔtiào river route from either side; two days one night for the 高路 Gāolù to 中虎跳 Zhōnghǔtiào.

flowcloud would say that the gorge is the Yangtze’s deepest argument – 23 km, a 3,900 m drop, twenty metres of river at the narrows and a legend about a tiger – and that the honest move is to pick one character of it: an hour on the 上虎跳 Shànghǔtiào platform or two days on the 高路 Gāolù skyline, because the canyon is the same and the legs are not. All checked October 2026.
