Tengchong Volcano Geopark: Dormant Cones, Basalt Columns and Balloon Mornings in Baoshan

千锤万凿出深山,烈火焚烧若等闲。Qiān chuí wàn záo chū shēn shān, lièhuǒ fénshāo ruò děng xián – A thousand hammer-blows and ten thousand chisels brought it out of the deep mountains; the blazing fire that burnt it treated it as nothing.

腾冲火山地质公园 Téngchōng Huǒshān Dìzhì Gōngyuán Tengchong Volcano Geopark spreads over the cone fields of 马站乡 Mǎzhàn Xiāng Mazhan Township, about 23 km north of the city. The Tengchong cluster holds roughly a hundred volcanic cones – the count is usually given as 97 worth confirming – of which more than 20 keep recognisable craters, the youngest eruptions dated to a few thousand years ago. The three classic climbs are 大空山 Dà Kōng Shān Big Empty Mountain, a truncated cone reached by about 600 stone steps worth confirming, 小空山 Xiǎo Kōng Shān Small Empty Mountain, whose crater bowl is the best-preserved of the group, and 黑空山 Hēi Kōng Shān Black Empty Mountain, the largest cone. “Empty” is the local joke and the accurate description: the craters are hollow bowls, wooded inside, and the climb up 大空山 looks straight into that green amphitheatre. The 火山博物馆 Huǒshān Bówùguǎn Volcano Museum at the entrance lays out the geology – basalt, volcanic bombs, the geothermal system – and 热气球 rèqìqiú hot-air balloons rise over the cone field on calm mornings for a separate fee of a few hundred yuan worth confirming.

The separate headline is the 柱状节理 Zhùzhuàng Jiélǐ columnar jointing, a cliff of black basalt columns in 曲石镇 Qǔshí Zhèn Qushi Town further north, mostly hexagonal and tens of metres tall, formed as the lava cooled and cracked into prisms. It is ticketed separately from the park worth confirming, and the two are usually driven in one loop. Park entry is quoted at about 35 yuan worth confirming; buses from Tengchong toward 马站 and 曲石 cost a few yuan, or a taxi covers the 23 km north for roughly 60-80 yuan worth confirming. The area belongs to the 火山热海 5A grade granted in 2024 and is also a national geopark worth confirming the current titles. Budget three to four hours for one cone plus the museum, and a full day if you add the columnar joints. The climbs are short but steep, on uneven stone, and fog is common before mid-morning, burning off by ten.

The honest appeal is scale and geology rather than scenery. From the rim of 大空山 on a clear day you see the whole Tengchong basin, the cones strung across the plain, and the 高黎贡山 Gāolígòng Shān Gaoligong crest to the west; the balloons fly early, when the wind is light, and the museum is worth twenty minutes before you climb. Note what the field actually is: dormant cones, with the magma chamber beneath still feeding the Rehai springs to the south, and a belt that is monitored by the local seismological bureau rather than fenced off as a hazard. Come in the dry season for visibility, wear shoes with grip, and carry water – there is nothing to buy at the top. Drive the cones and the columnar joints in one day and you leave with the complete story of how the Tengchong basin was built. All checked October 2026.

Practicalities

  • Rating: The 火山地质公园 Huǒshān Dìzhì Gōngyuán is the volcanic half of the same 5A 腾冲火山热海旅游区 – a cluster of dormant cones with China’s best-known 柱状节理 Zhùzhuàng Jiélǐ columnar-jointing cliff.
  • Tickets: About 35 yuan for the park, covering the 大空山 Dà Kōng Shān and 小空山 Xiǎo Kōng Shān cone walks; the columnar-jointing viewpoint is ticketed separately (worth confirming the details).
  • Address: 马站乡 Mǎzhàn Xiāng, about 23 km north of Tengchong city – bus to 火山公园 or a 30-minute taxi.
  • Time needed: Two hours for one cone climb and the museum; a half day with the columnar-jointing stop and the 黑空山 Hēi Kōng Shān rim.
