The district’s showpiece is a wound in the karst that never healed and never needed to. 武陵山大裂谷 Wǔlíng Shān Dàliègǔ, the Wuling Mountain Great Rift Valley, is a gorge system torn through the mountain country of 涪陵区 Fúlíng Qū, Fuling District, and rated among the province’s scenery at the top grade. Where most gorges ask you to walk beside them, this one asks you to descend into the tear itself – down ladders and ledges, along ledged galleries bolted to the rock, into a slot canyon where the walls close in and the daylight arrives filtered and green. It is the finest single landscape day the district holds, and it spends the whole of it below your feet.

The heart of the walk is 青天峡 Qīngtiānxiá, the Qingtianxia slot canyon. Here the gorge narrows until the walls close to a few metres and the light that reaches the floor goes blue-green – a corridor of stone so tight that the sky becomes a ribbon overhead, and the sound of your own boots on the planking is the loudest thing in the valley. The air down there carries the chill of water and shade even on days when the ridgetop above is warm, and every surface is either wet rock or fern. Walkers come out of the slot speaking more quietly than they went in, which the gorge presumably intends.
Then the route opens again, and the gorge shows its other temperament: height. The 天门洞 Tiānmén Dòng suspension bridge, the Heaven’s Gate crossing, is strung high between the walls – a span of steel and planking with the drop visible through it, crossing from wall to wall where the gorge is deepest. It is the photograph everyone takes and the two minutes nobody forgets, and the reason the full route is called three-dimensional: you have been under the landscape, between it, and now across it.

The return out of the gorge is the 平安阁 Píng’ān Gé cableway, the Ping’an Pavilion lift, which hoists you from the gorge country back toward the ridgetop in a quiet ascent – the last stage of a route that uses shuttle buses on the high ground and the cableway below to make a full three-dimensional circuit of one gorge system. The combination is the practical shape of the day: descend, thread the slot, cross the bridge, rise, and let the machinery do the parts your legs would otherwise bill you for.
The numbers that matter are the ones the record carries. The combined admission – entry together with shuttle and cableway – stands at 75 yuan, and entry closes at 16:00 from an 8:30 opening, which means the early start is not advice but arithmetic: a gorge this deep wants most of an opening day, and the ticket window will not negotiate with a late arrival. Come with the morning.
Words and Names
武陵山大裂谷 Wǔlíng Shān Dàliègǔ, the Wuling Mountain Great Rift Valley, the 5A-rated karst gorge system in 涪陵区 Fúlíng Qū, Fuling District. 青天峡 Qīngtiānxiá, the Qingtianxia slot canyon, where the walls close to a few metres and the light goes blue-green. 天门洞 Tiānmén Dòng, Heaven’s Gate, the suspension bridge strung high between the gorge walls. 平安阁 Píng’ān Gé, the Ping’an Pavilion cableway that lifts walkers back out of the gorge. The full route runs on shuttle buses plus this cableway, and the combined admission with both is listed at 75 yuan, entry running 8:30-16:00.
What the Locals Know
The local knowledge is the clock, same as it is for every deep gorge in this mountain country: the 8:30 opening is the hour the day belongs to you, and every hour after that it belongs to everyone else. Weekends push tour groups through the Qingtianxia slot in queues where the slot’s own width sets the pace, so a weekday start is worth rearranging a schedule for. Locals dress for the temperature drop rather than the forecast – the slot canyon holds its chill in high summer, and the walls shed a fine damp that finds unprepared shoulders – and they carry water from the top rather than betting on kiosks at the bottom of a gorge. The cableway ride out is the moment they stop walking and start looking; the gorge seen from the lift, walls unrolling below, is the view the morning climb never shows.

Practicalities
Tickets: the combined admission – entry with shuttle buses and the Ping’an Pavilion cableway included – is listed at 75 yuan. That package is what the record consulted prices; entry alone, or any concession split, is not quoted here because the record does not carry it. Opening hours: entry runs 8:30-16:00 on the same record – opening at half past eight, last entry at four in the afternoon – and the closing hour is the one that shapes the day, because the full circuit wants most of what the window allows. Closing day: no published weekly rest day is on the record consulted, and the page declines to invent one; deep gorges close for weather rather than calendars in any case, and the mountain’s own notice at the gate is the only authority worth checking.
flowcloud would say that Wuling Mountain Great Rift Valley is the district’s landscape at full volume – a tear in the karst you enter by ladder, read by blue-green light in the Qingtianxia slot, cross by the Heaven’s Gate bridge at the height of the drop, and leave by cableway, all inside one 75-yuan circuit that runs from 8:30 and closes its gate at 16:00, which is why the locals set their alarms before their doubts. All checked October 2026.
Getting there: the rift lies in the Wuling Mountain country away from the Yangtze, up the tourist line that runs from the 涪陵区 Fúlíng Qū district seat into the high townships – reached by the scenic-area road services or a driven run from town, with the mountain lodges of the same hills close enough to turn the circuit into an unhurried overnight. Pair this page with the wulingshan-rift-lodges page in the stay column for the two-day version: the gorge on the first morning, the forest park’s high meadows on the next. All checked October 2026.
