Baima Mountain: A Flying Kiss, a Tea Garden and the 4D Cinema

Yǐn yán: Bái mǎ shān gāo, yún duō chá xiāng; fēi tiān yī wěn, luò zài rén jiān. — Baima Mountain stands high, clouds many and tea fragrant; one kiss takes flight and lands among mortals.

Baima Mountain (白马山, Báimǎshān) is the newer, louder half of Wulong’s tourism offer: a 4A-rated (November 2019) mountain park in Baoyan Village, Baima town, built around a high tea garden, a pair of glass observation platforms marketed as the “Flying Kiss” (飞天之吻), an 8D cinema, and tea-picking and tea-making experiences. If the Three Bridges are Wulong’s cathedral, Baima Mountain is its amusement park — and both sell out their own season.

The mountain’s older identity is agricultural: Baima’s high tea gardens, at an elevation that keeps the leaf slow-growing and the pluck late. The park has built that into an experience — picking, withering, rolling and firing your own batch with a tea master. Above the garden, the “Flying Kiss” is a pair of rotating glass arms that lift visitors out over the slope; the name does the explaining. Admission to the platform is ticketed separately from the park (60 yuan).

Baima Mountain is the family day out — the one Wulong stop where children are the intended audience and the 8D cinema is the point rather than the kitsch. Come in spring for the pluck and in autumn for the colour; summer on the tea terraces is hot work. The mountain road up is narrow and the last stretch is all switchbacks; drivers who dislike edges should go by the park shuttle from the county town.

flowcloud would say that Baima Mountain proves a World Heritage county still knows how to have fun — and the tea you roll yourself tastes better than it has any right to.
