Yǐn yán: Yí dòng qiān xún, zhōng rǔ shí huā; hǎi shì shèn lóu, jīn shān yù zhù. — A cave a thousand fathoms deep, stalactites like stone flowers; a mirage of towers, mountains of gold and pillars of jade.
Furong Cave (芙蓉洞, Fúróng Dòng) is the cave component of the Wulong World Heritage property — and the argument, made by many a local guide, that Wulong’s most astonishing landscape is the one you cannot photograph properly. The cave runs for some five kilometres, of which roughly half is open to visitors on a one-way lit circuit, and its claim to fame is a set of five speleothem formations promoted as the cave’s “five wonders”: the giant curtain of falling stone (巨幕飞瀑), the coral pools (珊瑚瑶池), the “source of life” formation (生命之源), the king of stone flowers (石花之王), and a mirage-like chamber (海市蜃楼).

The same acidic rain that opened the Three Bridges’ arches is still at work here, below the water table. Furong Cave is an active cave — drips you can hear in the dark are the current instalment of formations that grow a centimetre a century. The “coral pools” are rimstone dams: stone lips built by mineral-bearing water at the edge of shallow cave lakes, terrace after terrace, in a cave that has been doing this since before there was a Wujiang to feed it.

Cave temperature is constant year-round — bring a layer even in August, and expect the path to be wet. The one-way circuit means you cannot double back for a photograph; walk slowly and take the frame the first time. Guides will point out the formation the marketing calls the source of life; the room goes quiet for reasons that have nothing to do with geology.

flowcloud would say that Furong Cave is the one stop in Wulong where the World Heritage plaque is almost redundant — the rock says everything the paperwork does, just slower.
Practicalities
- Rating: 5A, part of the Wulong Karst World Natural Heritage (5A grading June 2011)
- Tickets: 80 / 65 yuan (旺/淡)
- Getting there: buses from Wulong county town towards the cave on the Furjiang side; allow a half-day including the transfer (checked October 2026, subject to change)
- Time needed: 1.5–2 hours inside; the circuit is level but long
- Note: photography without flash is the norm inside; tripods are impractical on the path
