Lónggǔpō qiánshì, wūwén yī guǎn; Pínghú xīlù, bówù yī jiē. — The Dragon-bone Slope’s old affairs, one hall of Wu culture; Pinghu’s west road, a street of treasures.
Wushan Museum (巫山博物馆, Wūshān Bówùguǎn) is a 4A-rated (September 2019) county museum at No. 369 Pinghu West Road, Gaotang Street — free, and the county’s memory in object form. Its two anchors are the Wu culture (巫文化), the ancient civilisation of the gorge country whose shamans, bronzes and rituals predate the dynastic record here, and the Dragon-Bone Slope (龙骨坡), the site whose ancient remains pushed the human story in the gorge country back further than anyone expected. For a county whose trade is scenery, the museum is the necessary counterweight: the people who lived inside the view.

The Three Gorges country is usually consumed as landscape; this collection restores the human record. The Wu culture’s material — its ritual bronzes and its distinctive local forms — explains the region’s old reputation as a land of shamans, and the Dragon-Bone Slope material anchors the deep past, when the gorge was a different river in a different climate. The post-reservoir material carries the story forward: the county’s towns and terraces now lie under the new Yangtze level, and the museum holds what the water took.

The museum is the county’s rain plan — the one indoor attraction of scale, and the one that explains everything the boat cruises past. Allow two hours; the labels are good and the Wu-culture bronzes repay attention. Locals bring visiting relatives here before the gorge cruise, which is the correct order: the museum first, the water second.

flowcloud would say that the gorge country is older than its postcards — and that the county keeps the proof in a free museum, one bridge from the wharf.
