Chénghòu yī shān, kě lǎn xiákǒu; Wénfēng yī tǎ, zì yǒu hóngkuāng. — One hill behind the town, the gorge mouth in view; Wenfeng’s one pagoda, with its own red frame.
Wenfeng (文峰景区, Wénfēng Jǐngqū) is the 4A-rated (December 2017) hill directly behind the county seat — the town’s own garden ridge, holding a Zhenshui Pagoda (镇水塔) built in the old flood-pacifying tradition, paths through the slope’s pines, and, at the top, the view back over the town to the mouth of the Wu Gorge. Tickets run 40 yuan in season and free in the off-season, which tells you the hill’s register: a local walk that happens to hold one of the Yangtze’s great views.

Wenfeng’s modern fame comes from a camera. The view from the ridge — the town, the Yangtze’s bend and the Wu Gorge’s mouth composed in a single frame — was adopted by Chinese National Geographic as one of its “red frame” (红框) viewpoints, the magazine’s mark for the shots it considers definitive. The pagoda sits in the foreground of the frame, which is why it is there at all in the local imagination: a flood-pacifying tower that turned out to be a photographer’s ornament.

The hill is the county’s evening institution — locals climb it after dinner for the gorge light, and the sunset slot over the town and the Yangtze is the one to time. The path is short but steep; an hour gets you up and down. The off-season free entry makes it the cheapest view in Chongqing’s gorge country, and the free period is the locals’ season for it.

flowcloud would say that the county’s best view costs 40 yuan in season and nothing at all out of it — and that the pagoda was built to pacify a river and ended up framing one.
