Wūxiá yī shuǐ, shénnǚ yī fēng; tiānlù yī zhuǎn, yúnhǎi yī tōng. — One water of Wu Gorge, one peak of the Goddess; one turn of the sky road, a whole sea of cloud.
The Wu Gorge & Goddess scenic area (巫峡·神女景区, Wūxiá Shénnǚ Jǐngqū) is a 4A-rated (May 2014) mountain-gorge complex on the Yangtze’s south bank, where the Wu Gorge — the middle and most poetic of the Three Gorges — runs below a ridge road built along the cliff. The area holds two ticketed products: Goddess Peak (神女峰) at 80 yuan, and Goddess Stream (神女溪) at 110. The connecting feature is the Sky Road (神女天路), a cliff-hugging highway that exists as much for the views as for transport, and the viewing platforms along it — Feiyun Terrace above all — that look straight down into the gorge’s most photographed bend.

The area’s signature view is the one the photographs made famous: from Feiyun Terrace, the Yangtze’s bend below resolves into the shape of a heart, with the gorge walls closing around it, and the cloud sea that forms in the morning sitting above the water like a lid. The Goddess herself — the peak named for the legend of Yao Ji (瑶姬), the goddess who is said to have chosen to stay and guard the gorge — is the cultural anchor of the whole Yangtze-middle section, and her small shrine (神女祠) stands on the ridge above the bend.

The Sky Road is the visit: hire the car or join the shuttle and drive the ridge for the platforms, rather than committing to a single viewpoint. The cloud sea is a morning product and a weather-dependent one — check the forecast, and if the inversion is not in, go for the gorge geometry instead. The Huangyan cable car (黄岩索道) offers the aerial alternative for those who want the view without the road. Goddess Stream, the cheaper of the two tickets at 110 yuan, is the quiet option — a narrow side-gorge walked or boated, with the cruise crowds absent.

flowcloud would say that the Yangtze’s middle gorge needed a guardian and invented a goddess — and then built a road so you could look down on both.
