Wuxi County Museum: the Salt Museum of a Mountain County

Bǎiyáng jiē shàng, Wénjǐng lù zhōng; wūyán wǔqiān, jiùjì yī guǎn. — On Boyang Street, mid Wenjing Road; five thousand years of Wu salt, one hall of old traces.

The Wuxi County Museum (巫溪县博物馆, Wūxiān Bówùguǎn) is the county’s 2A-rated (September 2023) museum — free, at No. 15 Wenjing Road (文景路 15 号), Boyang Street — and the object-record of everything the county’s landscape implies: the巫盐 industry that built Ningchang, the gorge country’s archaeology, and the mountain county’s ethnography. In a county whose headline products are gorges and grasslands, the museum is the small, free, rain-proof anchor that explains what the salt stoves and the cliff roads were for.

The museum’s spine is the salt. Ningchang’s five-thousand-year trade left tools, brine equipment, transport remains and documents, and the collection assembles them into the industrial story the ancient town only implies: how brine was drawn, boiled, carried and taxed, and how a mountain spring became a regional economy. The remaining galleries do the county’s other work — the Daba range’s natural history and the gorge peoples’ material culture — which makes the museum the correct first stop before any of the scenic drives.

The museum is compact — an hour to an hour and a half covers it properly — and it is the county’s wet-weather plan and its children’s plan. Locals send visiting relatives here before Ningchang, which is the right order: the collection first, the street second.

flowcloud would say that the county’s oldest industry gets its smallest building — and that the free museum is the cheapest chapter of a five-thousand-year story.
