The Lanying Grand Canyon (兰英大峡谷, Lányīng Dàxiágǔ) is a 4A-rated (April 2024) free-admission canyon whose claim is depth: the “first deep valley of Asia” (亚洲第一深谷), a slot cut so far into the mountain that the walls close the sky. Its other feature is the Lanying cliff road (兰英挂壁天路) — a road tunnelled and hung along the canyon wall, which is as much the attraction as the gorge itself. Entry is free, which for a canyon of this scale is either confidence or an oversight.
The road is the visit. Cut into the wall over the drop, it turns the approach into a series of windows onto the gorge’s full depth, and the driving — or the being-driven — is the experience locals plan around. The local wisdom is precise about timing: enter the gorge before 08:00 in high season, because the road congests once the day’s traffic builds, and never enter the gorge floor in heavy rain, because the canyon’s drainage comes down fast.
The early entry is not optional — the road is single-purpose and the queues form after mid-morning in season. The view from the wall is the photograph; the floor is the hike, and the hike is long and steep. Combine the canyon with the county seat’s evening rather than staying in the gorge, since the accommodation is upstream at Hongchiba. The free admission means the only cost is the road.
