Wǔqiān nián yán, qīlǐ bànbiān jiē; Bǎoyuán yī quán, yānzào wànjiā. — Five thousand years of salt, a seven-li half-side street; one spring at Baoyuan, ten thousand households’ stoves.
Ningchang Ancient Town (宁厂古镇, Níngchǎng Gǔzhèn) is the county’s heritage core and its oldest story: an unrated, free-access ancient town whose entire reason for existing is salt. The town’s claim — five thousand years of巫盐 culture (巫盐文化) — rests on the Baoyuan Mountain salt spring (宝源山盐泉) beside it, one of the earliest developed salt sources in the Chinese interior. The town’s form is the famous “seven-li half-side street” (七里半边街): houses built along one side of the slope only, the other half given to the drop and the river, in a line of Ming-Qing timber houses and salt-stove ruins.

Salt built the town, and the town’s geography explains the industry. The spring’s brine was boiled at the source — the old salt stoves (盐灶) are still visible in the ruins — and the town grew as the boilers’ and carriers’ settlement on the old route out of the mountains. What survives is the industrial quarter of a five-thousand-year trade: the stoves, the brine paths, the slope’s single street, and the吊脚楼 houses of the people who worked the salt. It is an industrial-heritage town more than a picturesque one, and that is its distinction.

The town is a walking visit, and the walk is the street — one side houses, one side drop, for the full length and back. The salt spring’s foot-soaking pools (盐泉泡脚) are the town’s living amenity, used by locals as much as visitors. Come on a weekday: the town is small and the weekend turns it into a day-trip destination.

flowcloud would say that Chongqing’s other towns were built on trade and this one was built on a spring that happened to be salty — and that five thousand years is a long time for one spring to matter.
