The Hometown of the Conqueror: Xiang Wang Gu Li, Suqian
梧桐巷口霸王气,一骑绝尘两千年 Wútóng xiàng kǒu bàwáng qì, yī qí juéchén liǎng qiānnián – At the mouth of Parasol Lane still hangs the Conqueror’s air; one rider outpaced the dust two thousand years ago
正文:项王故里 Xiàngwáng Gùlǐ Xiang Wang Gu Li – the hometown of Xiang Yu, the Hegemon-King of Western Chu – is 宿迁市 Sùqiān Shì Suqian City’s claim on the first page of Chinese history. The Conqueror was born here in the Warring States era, in the old city of 下相 Xiàxiàng Xiaxiang, and the compound raised around his birthplace stages the legend at full volume: bronze equestrian statue at the gate, rebuilt Chu-style halls and courtyards, the ancient 梧桐巷 Wútóng Xiàng Parasol Lane of the story, and a daily programme of performances that re-enacts the swing from 霸王举鼎 bàwáng jǔdǐng lifting the cauldron to the farewell of 霸王别姬 Bàwáng Bié Jī the Hegemon-King bids the concubine farewell. It is heritage as theatre, and the city commits to it completely.

The gate sets the tone. The bronze horse and its rider stand before the compound’s Chu-style towers, visitors streaming beneath, and the scale tells the plan: this is one of the largest heritage-stage complexes in the province, built to hold school parties, tour coaches and the city’s own festivals in the same forecourt.
Inside, the compound runs the legend room by room. The halls hold the clan’s story – the general’s lineage, the uprising against Qin, the battles that nearly unmade the empire – and the grounds keep their own relics: ancient trees said to predate the Conqueror, wells and lane stones tied to the birth legends, and the performance courts where costumed troops drill to drums several times a day.
Give the compound two to three hours, more with children in the performance season. The halls take the middle of the day, the shows anchor the schedule, and the old-quarter food streets beside the gate close the loop – the Conqueror’s city eats well, and the compound’s exit lands you in the middle of it. Pair the visit with the Old Canal quarter for a full day on foot.

Practicalities
Beyond the Conqueror’s compound, the same 宿迁市 Sùqiān Shì Suqian City keeps more places worth the detour: 骆马湖 Luòmǎ Hú Luoma Lake the northern beaches, 三台山 Sāntái Shān Santai Mountain the flower-sea forest, 乾隆行宫 Qiánlóng Xínggōng the Qianlong Palace at Zaohe, or 洪泽湖湿地 Hóngzé Hú Shīdì the Hongze Lake Wetland in Sihong – four more doors into the same 宿迁市 Sùqiān Shì Suqian City. Once the legend is toured, our Suqian food map fills the table.
