Falls, Buddha and a Republic: Xikou’s Mountain of Dreams
千丈岩头飞雪浪,应梦名山藏古今 Qiānzhàng yán tóu fēi xuělàng, yīngmèng míngshān cáng gǔjīn – From Thousand-Fathom Cliff fly waves of snow; the dream-visited mountain keeps both past and present
溪口雪窦山 Xīkǒu Xuědòu Shān Xikou and Xuedou Mountain pair the two halves of 奉化 Fènghuà Fenghua’s fame – the riverside town where 蒋介石 Jiǎng Jièshí Chiang Kai-shek was born and kept returning, and the green massif above it where 千丈岩 Qiānzhàng Yán Thousand-Fathom Cliff drops a 186-meter ribbon that Song emperors dreamed about. The mountain holds 雪窦寺 Xuědòu Sì Xuedou Temple, the ancient Maitreya monastery now fronted by one of the world’s tallest seated bronze Buddhas, and the town below preserves the Chiang residences, salt shop and family shrines that make it the Republic of China’s most visited birthplace.

The falls are the mountain’s theater: Thousand-Fathom Cliff pours off a black basalt lip into a jade pool you can circle on cliff paths, and 三隐潭 Sānyǐn Tán the Three Hidden Pools staircase a whole creek up the valley in three tiers of falls – walk it downhill and the crowds thin behind you.

The temple quarter is the Buddhist chapter: Xuedou’s halls rebuilt on their Tang footprints, the giant Maitreya gazing across the valley, and pilgrim lanes that smell of incense and camphor. The town below is the history chapter – 丰镐房 Fēnghàofáng the Chiang ancestral house, 文昌阁 Wénchāng Gé the river pavilion villa, and the old streets where the Republic’s exiles walked off their politics.
Plan a full day: the town’s Republican sights in the cool morning, the shuttle up to the falls and temple midday, and if legs remain, the high trail to 妙高台 Miàogāotái Wonderful Height Terrace where Chiang kept a villa above the clouds. The bus back to Ningbo runs past the sea of taro fields that feed the town’s famous roast taro dinners.
Practicalities
- The scenic area sells combined tickets covering the town residences, the falls zone and the temple; shuttles link the far gates.
- Xikou sits 40 minutes by bus from Ningbo’s downtown; the drive from the city center runs about an hour.
- The Three Hidden Pools trail is one-way downhill – enter at the top gate, exit at the creek bottom, shuttle back.
- Winter mist can close the high terraces; the falls run fullest after spring rains.

Once the cliff has had its snow-waves, our Ningbo food map fills the table.
flowcloud would say Xikou is two stories leaning on one stream: a town that keeps its Republic props dusted, and a mountain that keeps pouring a Song-dynasty waterfall over all of it – history downstream, geology upstream, lunch where they meet. All checked November 2026.
Getting there: Xikou lies forty minutes by bus from Ningbo’s central station, with departures every half hour – the drive from downtown runs about an hour, and scenic shuttles meet every arrival at the Wuling Gate terminus. All checked November 2026.
