The River That Stays at Seventeen Degrees: Xin’an River, Jiande
十七度水起白雾,一江清凉出深山 Shíqī dù shuǐ qǐ báiwù, yī jiāng qīngliáng chū shēnshān – Water at seventeen degrees lifts its white mist; a river of cool runs out of the deep mountains
新安江 Xīn’ān Jiāng the Xin’an River is the cool-blooded river of 杭州市 Hángzhōu Shì Hangzhou City’s west – the great dam upstream holds the water so steady that what pours out of the turbines stays seventeen degrees all year, and where that chill meets Jiande’s summer air it condenses into 白沙奇雾 Báishā Qíwù the Baisha Wonder-Mist, a river-long fog that drifts through the town at dawn like a stage effect nobody ordered. The river made the town twice over: first as the ancient salt-and-tea artery into Anhui, then in 1957 as the dam that powered the new Zhejiang – and it furnished the lake downstream with its name and its fish. Jiande wears the river as its front yard: riverside bathing piers, a greenway that shadows the water for miles, and morning tai-chi crowds practicing inside the fog.

The mist is the appointment you cannot miss: at first light the water breathes, fog rolls off the seventeen-degree current in ropes and sheets, fishermen pole their boats through it like ink figures, and the whole river becomes a moving negative of itself. By mid-morning the fog burns off and the river turns simply, brilliantly green.
On the water itself, the town’s bathing piers run the summer ritual – locals plunge into water that never warms and never freezes, and the riverside park strings shade, teahouses and the famous 江边雾中 walk along the current. The 17-degree brand is on everything: the beer, the swimming clubs, the summer posters.
Downstream, the river settles into broader beauty – bridges and greenways, cormorant fishermen keeping the old partnership on the shallows, and evening light that turns the whole valley brass. Pair the morning fog with an evening greenway ride and Jiande gives you its two best hours in one day.

Beyond the cool current, the same 杭州市 Hángzhōu Shì Hangzhou City keeps more places worth the detour: 千岛湖 Qiāndǎo Hú the thousand islands of Qiandao Lake, 瑶琳仙境 Yáolīn Xiānjìng the lamp-lit caverns of Yaolin Wonderland, 富春江小三峡 Fùchūn Jiāng Xiàosānxiá the ink-wash gorges of the Fuchun River, or 梅城古镇 Méichéng Gǔzhèn the walled old prefecture of Meicheng – four more doors into the same 杭州市 Hángzhōu Shì Hangzhou City. Once the river has breathed its fog, our Hangzhou food map fills the table.
Practicalities
Getting there: Jiande sits about 1.5 hours from Hangzhou by rail or road – the dawn mist shows best from the Baisha bridge and riverside piers between May and October, summer opens the swimming sections, the riverside greenway runs for miles, and pairing the fog morning with Meicheng old town fills the day. All checked November 2026.

flowcloud would say Xin’an is a river with a thermostat: a dam that decided the temperature forever, a fog that rehearses every dawn and never repeats itself, and a town that learned to swim inside its own air-conditioning. All checked November 2026.
