Under the Covered Corridor: Xitang

烟雨长廊遮旧梦,一里廊棚枕河眠 Yānyǔ chángláng zhē jiù mèng, yī lǐ lángpéng zhěn hé mián – The misty corridor shades an old dream; a full li of roofed walkway sleeps along the river

西塘 Xītáng Xitang, in 嘉善县 Jiāshàn Xiàn Jiashan County, is the water town that built itself a roof. Its signature is the 烟雨长廊 Yānyǔ chángláng Misty-Rain Corridor – a covered, colonnaded walkway running more than a thousand steps along the canal, put up by merchants so their customers could shop through the rainy season dry. The result is a town with a spine: walk the corridor end to end and you pass every bridge mouth, every teahouse terrace, every lantern-hung doorway, rain or shine, exactly as the town intended two centuries ago.

The corridor earns its name in the drizzle. When mist sits on the water and the lamps come on early, the covered walk becomes the best seat in Jiangnan – boats sliding past at arm’s length, steam rising from teapot spouts, the black-tiled roofline running straight as a ruled line into the haze. Photographers wait whole afternoons for that five minutes; corridor loiterers get it free with their tea.

Off the corridor, the town compresses into alleys: 石皮弄 Shípí Nòng Stone-Skin Lane, the famous squeeze where two people pass sideways between walls polished by centuries of shoulders, and a web of smaller lanes where the courtyards hide teahouses, wine shops and the small museums of a working market town. Bridges stitch the banks together – 步拱桥 Bùgǒng qiáo and its neighbors – and every bridge top trades one canal view for another, the whole water web visible in a slow half-hour circuit.

Xitang’s other signature is its night market energy: the lane snacks run late, the bars keep the bridges lit, and the canal boats row their lantern strings until midnight – louder and warmer than its cousins, closer to a festival that never fully closes. The smart rhythm is day trip by day, night walk by night: the corridor at first light belongs to sweepers and cats, and the town’s best hour is the one just after the gates open, when the mist is still deciding whether to lift.

Practicalities

  • The old town ticket covers the corridor, bridges and small sights; entry is checked at the gates by day and free after the booths close at night.
  • Stone-Skin Lane bottlenecks badly by mid-morning – walk it first, then take the corridor slow.
  • Boat rides run from the main docks; the lantern-lit crossing is worth the ticket even on a short visit.
  • Jiashan South high-speed station is fifteen minutes by taxi; the town rewards one night over a day trip for the empty-morning hours.

Words and Names

西塘 Xītáng Xitang, the roofed water town; 烟雨长廊 Yānyǔ chángláng the Misty-Rain Corridor, the covered walkway; 石皮弄 Shípí Nòng Stone-Skin Lane, the narrowest alley; 嘉善 Jiāshàn Jiashan, the county; 廊棚 lángpéng the corridor sheds, the town’s spine. Beyond the corridor, the same 嘉兴市 Jiāxīng Shì Jiaxing City keeps more places worth the detour: 南湖 Nán Hú the red-boat lake, 乌镇 Wūzhèn the two-zone water town, 盐官观潮 Yánguān guāncháo the tide-watching shore, or 南北湖 Nánběi Hú the mountain-sea-lake reserve – four more doors into the same 嘉兴市 Jiāxīng Shì Jiaxing City. Once the corridor has had its rain, our Jiaxing food map fills the table.

flowcloud would say Xitang is a water town with a roof over its best idea: a thousand covered steps where the rain never wins, the tea never cools, and every bridge you cross hands the canal back to you from a slightly better angle. All checked November 2026.

Getting there: Xitang sits in Jiashan – the high-speed station is fifteen minutes by taxi, the old town gates open early and the corridor walk is best at first light, with night entry free after the ticket booths close. All checked November 2026.
