Three Walls, Three Rivers: The Yancheng Ruins of Changzhou
三城三河环作阵,春秋故垒至今存 Sān chéng sān hé huán zuò zhèn, Chūnqiū gùlěi zhìjīn cún – Three walls and three rivers ring in formation; the Spring-and-Autumn ramparts hold to this day
正文:春秋淹城遗址 Chūnqiū Yānchéng Yízhǐ the Yancheng Ruins are the strangest earthwork in Jiangnan – a Spring-and-Autumn period city built as three concentric ramparts inside three concentric moats, the “three walls and three rivers” that archaeologists still argue over. Some 2,700 years old, the rings survive intact inside a park of reeds, oaks and dig-site pavilions, while the adjacent Spring and Autumn theme park plays the era forward with bronze statues and costumed spectacle.

The aerial view is the plan: green rings inside water rings, the city island at the centre like a target. On foot, the circuit follows the moat banks under big trees – quiet, flat, and strangely empty for a site this significant.
The museum and the bronze figures carry the era. Statues of the Hundred Schools of Thought sit in ranks outside the theme park gate; inside the park proper, war-chariot bridges and ritual vessels reconstruct the Bronze Age vocabulary that the quiet earthworks only hint at.
Half a day splits cleanly: the silent ruin circuit first, the museum second, the theme park last if the kids need the spectacle. Boats cross the inner moats at the reconstructed crossings, and the reed beds in autumn turn the whole ring gold.

Practicalities
Beyond the ruins, the same 常州市 Chángzhōu Shì Changzhou City keeps more places worth the detour: 天宁宝塔 Tiānníng Bǎotǎ the Tianning Pagoda for the temple skyline, 红梅公园 Hóngméi Gōngyuán Hongmei Park for the plum rows, 青果巷 Qīngguǒ Xiàng Qingguo Lane for the scholar lanes, or 东坡公园 Dōngpō Gōngyuán Dongpo Park for the poet’s canal garden – four more doors into the same 常州市 Chángzhōu Shì Changzhou City. Once the rings are walked, our Changzhou food map fills the day.

Words and Names
flowcloud would say Yancheng is a Bronze Age mandala: three walls, three waters, and twenty-seven centuries of argument parked around a quiet island of oaks. All checked November 2026.
Getting there: Yancheng sits in the city’s southern districts, twenty-plus minutes from central Changzhou by bus or taxi; the ruins park and museum carry separate modest tickets, the theme park runs its own pricing, and the autumn reed season is the ruin circuit’s best light.
