Yanoda Rainforest, the Canyon Park with Its Own Greeting

Yanoda Rainforest Cultural Tourism Zone sits in Sandao Town (the Sandao Farm area) on the west side of National Highway 224, in the south of Baoting Li and Miao Autonomous County – about 40 kilometres from the county seat at Baocheng, 35 kilometres from downtown Sanya and 52 kilometres from Phoenix airport. Its name is the first thing every visitor asks about: yanoda is an onomatopoeic turn meaning one, two, three in the local Hainanese dialect, and the park has built itself around it. Staff greet arrivals with a raised V-sign and the shout “yanoda”, and the three syllables are said to carry welcome, hello and good wishes all at once.

The park soft-opened in February 2008 and climbed the ratings ladder quickly: Hainan’s first 4A-rated rainforest-themed scenic area in July 2010, then national 5A in January 2012, formally plated that February, making it the island’s third 5A. Its first year drew 136,000 visitors; by 2011 the figure had reached 1.13 million, and 2012 closed at 1.33 million. Behind the numbers is a park that sets out to show rainforest rather than merely protect it: three valleys – Rainforest Valley, Dream Valley and Sandao Valley – carry walkways, waterfalls and pools through fig trees, tree ferns and hanging vines, and by the operator’s own marketing the whole reserve runs to about 45 square kilometres. That last figure is the company’s, not a surveyor’s, so read it as scale rather than measurement.

What distinguishes Yanoda from a summit trek is that almost everything here happens on built structures. The signature experience is tashu xishui, a waterfall-and-stream walk that wades and climbs through pools and cascades and hands out anti-slip overshoes at the gate. Above the canopy, the Wailu glass platform cantilevers out over the valley – the operator gives its clear span as 108 metres with a 257-metre glass walkway – and a long zipline crosses the gorge for those who want the crossing faster. The Yanoda 123 Adventure Park adds stream rafting, canyoning and two graded via ferrata routes, and the viewing deck looks out toward Haitang Bay, Wuzhizhou island and the Nanwan monkey peninsula. Heights and water are the two standing cautions: guests with heart or blood-pressure conditions are advised against the high-altitude items, and stream shoes are supplied for a reason.

The park’s honours are unusually long for a private scenic area, and they explain why it is treated as a national model rather than a local attraction. It holds the national cultural industry demonstration base title from 2012, national science education and student study-practice base designations, national forestry key leading enterprise status, national forest health base and national ecological culture demonstration base listings, and a place in the first batch of national tourism standardisation pilots in 2010. In December 2011 UNESCO launched its “good tourism” project at the park, and in October that year the Yanoda Rainforest No. 1 Resort Hotel opened on site – the moment the park began shifting from day-trip sightseeing toward overnight resort business. The beds side of that story belongs to this site’s hotel pieces; here it is enough to note that the park is no longer only a place you leave at closing time.

Part of what makes Yanoda remarkable is simply where it stands. Sandao Town holds both of the county’s 5A parks – Yanoda and Binglanggu – a concentration almost no single township in China can match, and the two share the same stop on the Sanya intercity bus line. A sensible day runs the canyon in the morning, when the mist is still in the trees and the coaches have not arrived, breaks for lunch in town, and spends the afternoon in a second, entirely different park. Winter and spring, November into April, are the dry-season months when the boardwalks stay dry and the waterfalls are at their clearest; midsummer brings the heaviest rain and the fullest streams.

Practicalities

Tickets. There is no standalone gate ticket; entry and the cable car are sold as packages, with adult all-in fares from about 200 yuan including the round-trip cable car. Hainan-resident passes run cheaper, and the family and adventure bundles – stream trekking, via ferrata, the glass platform – rise from there. Checked October 2026, subject to change.

Opening hours. The park publishes 08:30 to 18:00; last entry falls well before closing, and the adventure park and glass platform keep their own last-admission times. Arrive at opening if you want the walkways to yourself.

Closing day. No closing day – the park is open year-round, and every day is a working day barring typhoon closures announced on the day.

Getting there. Self-drive from Sanya runs about 35 kilometres on the G98 ring road and National Highway 224, roughly an hour; the Shanhai Expressway from the Haitang Bay side is quicker now that the Baoting section has opened. The Sanya intercity bus line 1, which starts at Sanya Railway Station and ends at Qixianling, stops at the Yanoda gate, and coaches from Sanya’s main bus station run the route in about 45 minutes.

flowcloud would say that Yanoda is the county’s loudest hello – a park that teaches the rainforest through a raised hand and three shouted syllables – and that a canyon which counts its visitors in millions still keeps its best hour just after the gates open.
