Lamps on Ten Thousand Years of Stone: Yaolin Wonderland, Tonglu

瑶琳洞里千般景,灯火深处别有天 Yáolín dòng lǐ qiān bān jǐng, dēnghuǒ shēnchù bié yǒu tiān – A thousand scenes inside the Yaolin caves; deep past the lamps opens another sky

瑶琳仙境 Yáolīn Xiānjìng Yaolin Wonderland is the karst cathedral of 杭州市 Hángzhōu Shì Hangzhou City’s west – a limestone solution cavern under Tonglu’s hills where thirty million years of seep-water patience hung curtains, columns and terraces through seven connected halls, and 1980s lighting design turned the geology into theater. The painted name says it plainly: painters and poets ranked it “诸洞之冠” – the crown of all China’s caves – and the walk-through runs nearly a kilometer past flagged stalagmites, underground pools and flowstone screens that the lamps tint amber, jade and violet. Cool air holds a constant 18 degrees year-round, which made the cave a summer refuge long before it was a ticketed wonder.

Lit stalactites and columns filling a vast karst chamber inside Yaolin Wonderland, no people and no readable text in frame

The first hall sets the scale: a vault big enough to lose a church in, stalactites raining from the ceiling in frozen drips, and a paved gallery that sinks gently toward the second chamber. Guides point out the named formations – a stone waterfall, an immortal’s pillow, a frozen lotus – and half the pleasure is seeing them flicker into likeness as the lamps shift.

Deeper in, the cavern tightens around its best passages: flowstone terraces step down like rice-paddy walls of jade, a subterranean pool mirrors the columns so the chamber doubles itself, and the modern light show washes the great drapery in slow color. Photographers trip over their own feet here; the cave punishes haste and rewards a tripod.

Out on the surface, the wonderland sits in a fold of hills that keeps more of the county’s pleasures close – the 天目溪 Tiānmù Xī raft drift runs the valley below, and the county town’s famous noodles are a short hop away. Pair the cave’s chill with the valley’s sun and you have Tonglu’s most reliable half-day.

Beyond the lit caverns, the same 杭州市 Hángzhōu Shì Hangzhou City keeps more places worth the detour: 千岛湖 Qiāndǎo Hú the thousand islands of Qiandao Lake, 富春江小三峡 Fùchūn Jiāng Xiàosānxiá the ink-wash gorges of the Fuchun River, 梅城古镇 Méichéng Gǔzhèn the walled old prefecture of Meicheng, or 新安江 Xīn’ān Jiāng the seventeen-degree river of Jiande – four more doors into the same 杭州市 Hángzhōu Shì Hangzhou City. Once the stone has had its lamps, our Hangzhou food map fills the table.
