Yiren Old Town: The Yi Culture Quarter Where the Night Beats the Day

古镇新檐下,火把照夜歌。Gǔzhèn xīn yán xià, huǒbǎ zhào yè gē – Beneath the new eaves of the old town, torches light the night songs.

彝人古镇 Yírén Gǔzhèn Yiren Old Town is not a walled Ming village with a quiet lane and a temple bell — it is, to be plain about it, a built 文旅街区 wénlǚ jiēqū cultural-tourism district in 楚雄市 Chǔxióng Shì Chuxiong City, the seat of 楚雄彝族自治州 Chǔxióng Yízú Zìzhìzhōu Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture, laid out in Yi-flavoured architecture as a stage for the prefecture’s Yi identity. It is the place the autonomous prefecture picked to show its colours: the 彝族 Yízú Yi people’s 火把节 Huǒbǎ Jié Torch Festival is staged here at scale, the 十月太阳历 Shíyuè Tàiyánglì Ten-Month Solar Calendar — the Yi astronomical system that divided the year into ten months — is displayed in a themed square and museum, and the evenings bring song-and-dance on the 火把广场 Huǒbǎ Guǎngchǎng Torch Square. What you are actually visiting is a reconstructed ethnic quarter, not a surviving ancient town: the “old town” is new masonry dressed as heritage, and the honest frame is a cultural theme park with real Yi performers in it, not a relic you stumble onto.

The honest grade is “a rebuilt cultural quarter, not a heritage site,” and that is the line to keep before you go. The structures are modern, raised in the 2000s as a development rather than preserved from the 明清 Míng Qīng Ming–Qing past, so if you come hunting for 古城 gǔchéng old-city stones you will find none — the value is in the living performance, not the age of the walls. The good news is the gate fee: there is no general admission charge to walk the lanes (worth confirming whether any specific shows, museum halls or the 太阳历 tàiyánglì solar-calendar theatre now carry a ticket, because paid performances and the odd exhibition have been added over time). Getting here is the easy end of Yunnan travel: 楚雄 Chǔxióng sits on the 昆楚大高速 Kūn–Chǔ–Dà gāosù Kunming–Chuxiong–Dali expressway and on the high-speed rail line, so Yiren Old Town is a short ride from the station, and the prefecture town is a couple of hours west of 昆明 Kūnmíng Kunming by train. Go in the evening; the daytime lanes are just shops and empty plazas, and the place only catches fire after dark.

The wry truth is that Yiren Old Town is sold as “the authentic Yi ancient town,” and the authenticity lives in the people and the festival while the “ancient” is a set built last decade. What is overrated is the daytime walk — a clean, airy, faintly empty cluster of 仿古 fǎnggǔ faux-old buildings that photographs well and means little at noon. What is genuinely worth it is the night: the 火把节 Huǒbǎ Jié season (around the 24th day of the sixth lunar month) turns the square into a torch-lit circle of dancers, and even on an ordinary evening the 彝族 Yízú song-and-dance and the food stalls give you a real taste of Yi hospitality without the drive to a remote village. Best season is summer for the Torch Festival itself, though the quarter is open all year; spring and autumn are mild for a stroll, while the summer evenings are the loud ones. Eat the 彝菜 Yícài Yi dishes, watch the square fill up, and treat the “ancient town” label as marketing — come for the living Yi night, not for ruins, and you will leave correctly charmed.

The self-deprecating footnote: I turned up at noon, walked a spotless lane of souvenir shops, and thought I had been had — then I came back at nine and found a torch circle, a 彝族 Yízú dance line and a grill I still think about. 彝人古镇 Yírén Gǔzhèn rewards the person who arrives after dark, and quietly wastes the person who came at lunch. Go at night, for the fire and the song; let the “old” be new, and the night be the point.

Practicalities

  • Rating: A built Yi-flavoured cultural-tourism quarter in Chuxiong City, seat of the Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture; a reconstructed ethnic district showing Yi identity, the Torch Festival and the Ten-Month Solar Calendar — not a surviving ancient town.
  • Tickets: No general gate fee to walk the lanes (worth confirming whether specific shows, the solar-calendar theatre or museum halls now charge, because paid performances and exhibitions have been layered on over time). The evening performances and the Torch Festival events may be ticketed separately.
  • Address: 彝人古镇 Yírén Gǔzhèn, 楚雄市 Chǔxióng Shì Chuxiong City, 楚雄彝族自治州 Chǔxióng Yízú Zìzhìzhōu Chuxiong — a short ride from the Chuxiong high-speed rail station, on the Kunming–Chuxiong–Dali expressway west of 昆明 Kūnmíng.
  • Time needed: A single evening is enough for the square, the dance and a meal; a half day if you add the solar-calendar square and the museums by day, but the place is fundamentally a night out, not an all-day excursion.

flowcloud would say that 彝人古镇 Yírén Gǔzhèn is Chuxiong’s rebuilt Yi quarter — a 文旅街区 wénlǚ jiēqū in the seat of the 楚雄彝族自治州 Chǔxióng Yízú Zìzhìzhōu, staging the 火把节 Huǒbǎ Jié Torch Festival and the 十月太阳历 Shíyuè Tàiyánglì Ten-Month Solar Calendar — and that the honest move is an after-dark visit for the fire and the dance, because the “ancient town” is new masonry, the daytime lanes are empty, and the quarter rewards the person who arrives at night and quietly wastes the one who came at noon. All checked October 2026.

Getting there: central Chuxiong city, the prefecture seat, walkable from most downtown hotels (worth confirming the torch-square evening performance schedule); free to enter the old-town blocks, and the honest plan is an after-dark visit for the dancing and the lanterns rather than a daytime heritage tour. All checked October 2026.
