Gongtan Ancient Town (龚滩古镇, Gōngtān Gǔzhèn) is a 4A-rated (graded September 2010), free-access town on the Wujiang river (乌江) bank — a wharf town of the river trade, kept as its own monument: the bluestone old street (青石板老街) climbing the bank, the West-Qin Guild Hall (西秦会馆) that the Shaanxi merchants’ trade left behind, and the Ran family compound (冉家院子), the old-town house type at its most finished. Off the bank, the Wujiang Hundred-Li Gallery boat (乌江百里画廊游船) runs at about 80 yuan a head, and the sunset session is the one to book.
A guild hall is a trade’s receipt, and Gongtan’s is the Shaanxi merchants’ — the West-Qin Guild Hall is the physical proof that this bend of the Wujiang was a node of the long-distance river trade, where the mountain interior’s goods met the river’s carriers and the outside merchants who paid for the hall. The old street’s slope and the compound’s courtyards are the wharf economy’s architecture: houses stacked on a bank that had no flat land, built by people whose money came off boats.
The boat at sunset is the town’s correct arrival — the Gallery’s light on the gorge walls is the reason the 80 yuan is worth paying. The guild hall and the compound are the two indoor stops on the street; the bluestone slope is the walk itself. The town’s evenings belong to the river-front rooms, and the morning belongs to the residents’ street.
