Yudu Mountain: The Upper Valley Above Longqing Gorge, Its Forest Streams and High Meadows, and the Quietest Walking in Yanqing District, Beijing
溪声一路随人上,草甸无声接海坨。Xīshēng yīlù suí rén shàng, cǎodiàn wúshēng jiē Hǎituó – The stream’s voice follows you all the way up; the meadow, saying nothing, meets Haituo.
玉渡山 Yùdù Shān Yudu Mountain is not a resort with a lawn and a car park and a queue for the swing — it is, plainly put, the quiet upper valley of the same water system that fills 龙庆峡 Lóngqìng Xiá Longqing Gorge below: a forested basin in 张山营镇 Zhāngshānyíng Zhèn Zhangshanying town, in the far northwest of 延庆区 Yánqìng Qū Yanqing District, sitting under the shoulders of 海坨山 Hǎituó Shān Haituo Mountain, the second-highest summit in Beijing. Water is the whole point of the place. Springs come out of the hillside and gather into a stream that runs the length of the valley floor, dropping over small falls, pooling behind logs, and threading between birches and pines that have been left to grow into something close to 原始次生林 yuánshǐ cìshēnglín old-growth secondary forest. Above the trees the ground opens into 高山草甸 gāoshān cǎodiàn alpine meadow, grass to the knee, larks overhead, the ridgeline bare and enormous behind. What you actually visit is a walk up a wet valley into open grass — no rides, no shows, very few signs.

Call it honestly: the reserve charges a gate fee, with no cable car and no internal shuttle beyond the access road, and the road in is narrow enough that private cars are sometimes held at the outer gate and visitors walked or shuttled in (worth confirming the details for current admission, vehicle rules on the access road and winter closures, since snow can shut the valley entirely). The honest warning is self-reliance, not cost. There is almost nothing to buy once you are inside, phone signal comes and goes, the paths are wet where the stream crosses them, and afternoon storms build fast against Haituo. Bring water, a layer, insect repellent in July, and shoes you do not mind soaking. May and June give the meadow its flowers, October gives it gold, and midwinter is beautiful and largely closed. Give it three hours for a there-and-back to the meadow, more if you mean to reach the upper falls.

The honest star is the meadow with the stream looping through it — grass, water, one crooked fence, a scatter of grazing cattle that ignore you entirely, and the ridge behind going up into cloud, a scene so plain that people stand in it for a while and then sit down (worth confirming the details for how far the marked trail runs on your day, as the upper sections close first). What gets oversold is the phrase “Beijing’s Switzerland”, which is applied to every piece of grass north of the sixth ring and describes nothing. What repays the effort is the quiet. This is one of the few valleys within two hours of the city where the loudest thing in the afternoon is water, and where the walk back down is as good as the walk up. Come for the layering of the place: spring, then stream, then the meadow opening out under the ridge.
The self-aware postscript: I ate lunch on the grass beside a couple from 海淀 Hǎidiàn who had carried a folding table up the valley and were drinking tea off it with tremendous seriousness, and when I laughed the woman said, “we come every year and every year it is the same grass — that is exactly what we are paying for”. That is the visit in miniature. 玉渡山 Yùdù Shān suits whoever treats it as a slow wet walk and a picnic first and a summit second, and exhausts anyone wanting facilities, viewpoints with railings, or a route that stays dry. Everything else on this Yanqing list lies within the same district: the boat between the cliffs of 龙庆峡 Lóngqìng Xiá Longqing Gorge directly below this valley, the carved cliff rooms of 古崖居 Gǔyájū Guyaju Caves on the same western hillside, the Ming brick of 八达岭长城 Bādálǐng Chángchéng Badaling Great Wall to the south, and the long river road of 百里山水画廊 Bǎilǐ Shānshuǐ Huàláng Baili Gallery in the northeast.
Practicalities
- Rating: ★★★★☆ — the quietest valley on this list, with real stream walking and a genuine alpine meadow; the grass and the water outrank any facility; a star off for the thin infrastructure and the wet feet.
- Tickets: Gate fee, no cable car and no internal shuttle beyond the access road, with vehicle rules and winter closures varying by season (worth confirming the details for current admission, road access and whether the valley is open at all in snow).
- Address: 玉渡山 Yùdù Shān, 张山营镇 Zhāngshānyíng Zhèn Zhangshanying town, 延庆区 Yánqìng Qū, Beijing — in the northwest corner of the district below 海坨山 Hǎituó Shān, upstream of 龙庆峡 Lóngqìng Xiá.
- Time needed: Three hours for the walk to the meadow and back; five or six for the upper falls and a long picnic, with an early start either way.

flowcloud would say that 玉渡山 Yùdù Shān is the valley that stayed out of the brochure — a spring-fed basin under 海坨山 Hǎituó Shān in 张山营镇 Zhāngshānyíng Zhèn, 延庆区 Yánqìng Qū, where a 溪流 xīliú runs the length of the floor through 原始次生林 yuánshǐ cìshēnglín and the trees give way to 高山草甸 gāoshān cǎodiàn with the ridge going up into cloud behind — and that the honest move is an early start with water, a layer and shoes you do not mind soaking, because admission, access-road vehicle rules and winter closures all shift (worth confirming the details), the “Beijing’s Switzerland” line is the poster half and wet grass and a folding table under a lark are the real half, and the valley repays whoever comes to walk slowly rather than to tick it. All checked October 2026.
Getting there: The 919 Express from 德胜门 Déshèngmén Deshengmen to 延庆城区 Yánqìng chéngqū Yanqing town, then a taxi northwest through 张山营 Zhāngshānyíng to the reserve gate, since no city bus runs the last stretch (worth confirming the details for whether private cars may drive the access road on your day); self-drive follows the 京藏高速 Jīngcáng gāosù G6 to the 延庆 Yánqìng exits, then the 110 国道 guódào and the signed valley road past 龙庆峡 Lóngqìng Xiá and up toward the gate. All checked October 2026.
