Three Gorges Ladder City

Yǐn yán: Yún yáng tī chéng, shí jí shēng tiān. — Yunyang’s ladder city climbs to heaven by stone steps.

Yunyang’s old town is nicknamed the Ladder City (梯城) for a simple, literal reason: the county seat is built up the side of a steep riverside hill, and to move through it is to climb. The 4A-rated cultural district that now carries the name Three Gorges Ladder City gathers the town’s steps, gardens and waterfront into one walkable whole, centred on the ancient Panshi Fortress (磐石城) and crowned by the Yunyang Tower (云阳楼). It is a place that rewards the willing legs — every quarter of an hour on foot gains you a new terrace and a new sightline down to the Yangtze.

Panshi Fortress, the “Sounding-Stone Fortress”, is the historic anchor of the district: a walled stronghold set on a rocky height above the river, used for centuries to watch the Yangtze and to shelter the townspeople in troubled times. Its stone walls and gates survive as the oldest bones of the Ladder City, and from its ramparts the whole stepped town spreads below like a diagram of itself. Nearby, the Yunyang Tower rises as the modern emblem of the hill — a multi-tiered pavilion in traditional style that you can ascend for a panorama taking in the reservoir, the far banks and the long green sweep of the lakeside greenway that loops the town’s foot.

Between the fortress and the tower the district is a sequence of gardens, restored lanes and flights of stone steps worn smooth by generations of climbers. The lakeside greenway is the gentle counterpoint to all that climbing: a flat, paved loop beside the water where locals walk, jog and fly kites at dusk, and where the effort of the hill is forgotten in the open air. Small teahouses and food stalls appear at the landings, and the famous Yunyang noodle (云阳面) is never far — a bowl of it at the top of a long flight is its own kind of reward. Because the town was rebuilt and re-terraced after the reservoir rose, the Ladder City is both old in spirit and new in stone, a townscape that admits the dam’s history while keeping its vertical character. Go in the early morning for cool steps and few people, or at sunset when the tower catches the last light and the greenway fills with the easy rhythm of the evening. Either way, pace yourself; the city is a staircase, and the view at the top is earned one step at a time.
