The Three Gorges Orange Sea (三峡橘海) is not a sea at all, but ten thousand mu of terraced citrus groves that climb the Yangtze slopes of Tújǐng Township (涂井乡) on Zhongxian’s northern shore. From a distance the hills are a single green wash, but up close the orange (橘) trees are planted in neat ranks that follow every contour of the land, row after row descending toward the water. In spring the slopes turn white with blossom, a faint sweetness carried on the river wind; in late autumn the same branches hang heavy with fruit the colour of lanterns, and the whole hillside seems lit from within. It is a working landscape, harvested by hand, but the scale of it — a citrus sea with the Yangtze bending at its feet — is what earns the name.

The two seasons give the place a double life. Come in April and the groves are loud with bees and the soft scent of 橘 blossom, the air almost milky where the petals drift; come in November and the pickers are out with woven baskets, the fruit thudding into the loads that will be carried down to the river boats. Between the two, the trees hold their glossy leaves through the humid summer, and the terraces become a calm green amphitheatre facing the gorge. Villagers say the microclimate of the slope — sheltered, warmed by the reflected light off the water — is what makes the Zhongxian orange so sweet, and the county has cultivated the fruit here for generations, long before the reservoir widened the river below.

At the top of the planting a viewing platform (观景台) lets you look back over the 江湾, the broad river bay where the Yangtze curves away toward the gorges and the groves fall away in striped green steps toward the shore. It is the kind of overlook where a photographer lingers: the line where cultivated land meets wild water, the slow cargo ships threading the channel, the far bank hazy under whatever weather the season allows. There is no grand entrance or ticket hall — the Orange Sea is mostly open slope, free to wander, with a few family stalls near the platform selling fresh juice and bags of fruit at a few yuan. Allow around an hour for the walk up and the view, longer if you want to follow the terrace paths down toward the water and watch the pickers at work. All checked October 2026.
